So, driving up to go snowboarding with one of my best friends today, we got stopped. Speed trap. First we saw an orange sign saying "STATE POLICE AHEAD."
Hmmm. Slowed down. There's about five squad cars on the shoulder of an exit pointing people over. We slow more. My friend says "I think he's pulling us over."
"REALLY?!"
"Dude! Pull over!"
State trooper with Really Mean Look on his face is motioning us over. Crap. We pull over. Sit and wait. Luckily, it wasn't Mr. Mean Face that came over. Instead, it was Mr. Really Blue Eyes (I am not kidding, he had some Really Blue Eyes). He was also Not Mean.
"The reason I stopped you is because you were speeding. Can I have your license and registration please?"
"Sure." Hand it to him. He checks stuff over.
"We actually tracked you by video and airplane."
My friend and I both exclaim, "You have AIRPLANES?!" and begin to look for them.
Mr. Blue Eyes is now smiling. "We tracked you doing 81 and 79 miles per hour. Did you know you were going that fast?"
"Yessir, I always go 80."
By now he's laughing. "Well, I appreciate your honesty."
"Not a problem, sir. And I have to tell you, you guys have the BEST hiding spots. I'm serious. I always pass them and say that's a GREAT hiding spot."
Now he's REALLY laughing. "Thank you. Let me go run this stuff, I'll be right back."
Wait a few minutes. Mr. Blue Eyes comes back. "Okay, I did write you a ticket. But because you were honest, I gave you a break and wrote the ticket for 80 and not 81. Now, it doesn't sound like a lot until you look at the fine schedule, and that'll actually save you about fifty bucks."
"Thank you."
"Not a problem. Slow it down and drive safe."
"Hey, is it okay if I go 70?"
He pauses. Laughs again. "You really won't get any trouble doing 70. Just try not to do that right in front of a marked vehicle."
"No problem. Have a good day!"
"You too."
He walks off. We drive off.
You know, it's like cops and robbers. He totally got me and I went 70 after that. There's no point in me freaking out or lying or any of that because I did speed. Might as well be honest (since I suck at lying anyway) and my friend and I probably became his Story of The Day.
And he really did have nice eyes.
And no, I didn't tell him THAT.

It always works! Whenever I get caught doing something I'm not supposedto be doing I go blunt honesty and politeness, sometimes which a touch of meekness added on. People always let you off easier and you often gain a bit of respect from them in the process Posts: 3295 | Registered: Jun 2004

As a person listed as a habitual traffic offender for the next three years of my life who has had his license suspended, I'd highly recommend not speeding anymore in any way. Do everything you can to follow traffic law to the letter. It cost me a lot of time, money and energy to get my license back, and it's sapping me financially to insure my vehicle.
Do. Not. Speed. Stop completely at every stop sign. Check to make sure you can make any questionable turn before trying. Always stop when the light is yellow. Don't assume that no one is watching, because they probably are and you'll get a ticket.
Here's a great piece of advice. I should write a book about this and make a million bucks. It's a really great idea like the pet rock. That guy make a million bucks. How to do these things and not be late for work or a meeting...
Sorry you had to learn that lesson the expensive way. Assigned risk or "high-risk" insurance classification is really no fun at all.
Mack...that rule may work in some states at some times, but many jurisdictions have special times of the year (usually around major holidays) where they will do some zero-tolerance enforcement of speed and other traffic laws.
And, with the amount of construction zones still out there in this pre-blizzard season weather, you also have to worry about the zones of "double-fines, double-points" (and also have to worry about killing roadworkers, of course).

Other than speeding, I do follow the letter of the law for traffic, and get no end of crap from my friends. I've talked to my insurance company, and they said my classification would change only if I got so many tickets within a year, which hasn't happened, so at least my insurance is safe.
However, I do not want another ticket.
Guess who will be going the speed limit?
