Yuck. I get enough hearing bad versions of Xmas songs working at the supermarket. I dislike hearing 50 versions of I'll be Home For Christmas and White Christmas. Please retire them.. Now. Plus Celine Dion should NOT sing anything and only Nat King Cole can sing the Christmas song.

I'd like to formally kill the thread by posting in it. I would not like to listen to Christmas music all day. One or two songs is about all I can stand. I'm just not the type to "get into" a holiday.

At work, we have a 5-CD changer we have to listen to all day. Currently, one of the albums is one where Rosie O'Donnell sings duets with people like Cher, Elton John, and Donny Osmond. Included, for some reason, is the Savage Garden "Gave it to Someone Special"
Can't handle that song.
Sick.
Who thought it was OK, not only to write once, but to cover?!

I am just thankfull that the Navy doesn't play christmas music over the announcing circuit. Yikes, I had enough of that when I worked at Kmart. However, we do listen to music in the office. Guns N Roses, AC/DC, Soil, Metallica, etc. I left off my Cradle of Filth from the computer in the office thinking Senior wouldn't like it.....gross overstatement. Some of the NuMetal I have on there (which is not harsh at all at times) he can't stand.
Anyway, Trans Siberian Orchestra. That is the only Christmas music I will listen to anymore. Sorry Hobbes, I have a Bing Crosby tape at my parent's house collecting dust. He's ok, just that he can't top TSO.

Here, where Christians number only about 7% of the population, that song is used by the ice cream bicycle people. And it hits my neighborhood, oh, every day. Sometimes several times a day.

I must admit that I stopped going "home" to spend Christmas with "the family" when I was, oh, about 23. I put those words in quotations because a. if home is where the heart is, it was never home and b. family, when love is included in the definition, is not what they were. We were merely biologically related.
I started spending Christmases mostly with best friends and their families. And then, when I moved to another province, I started spending it with my favorite aunt and uncle.
Much better to spend it with people you care about, in my opinion.

We have a station here that switched to all holiday music, but it's one of those Lite stations that nobody ever listens to anywhere except at work, so I don't resent it. In fact, the only time I ever listen to tyhis station is between Thanksgiving and Epiphany. I do like hearing Christmas songs during that time. I specifically enjoy Christmas renditions by rock/pop/country/non-Christmas artists. I think the fact that they will do these songs says something is right with the world. Many renditions stink, but that's okay.
(And I very much like Wham's "Last Christmas," but then, unlike many of you, I was alive when they recorded it. )

I started listening to Christmas music on the 1st of December. I've got some good ones, but also a bunch of cheesey tapes and cds that I got real cheap at the local discount chain, the absolute worst one being a Christmas Party, with non stop singing to a "party" beat and a particularly annoying woman's voice screeching over the top of the other voices on all the songs. It's truly terrible. My wife likes it. My favourites are Nat King Cole, Tab Choir, and any nice orchestral versions of the traditional carols and songs. Bit of a Christmas freak, actually, my wife and I go all out decorating the inside of the house, and often just sit in the living room late at night soaking up the atmosphere...

One of the two major stations in my normal rotation has made this switch, and it's really ticking me off.
The DJs in the morning had complained about other stations doing this same thing last year, and now you can tell that they're not too happy about this switch. Apparently, they got killed in the ratings last year by stations that made the switch, and they decided to go "all x-mas all the time" this year.
Damn it's annoying.
And the *other* major station in my rotation has picked upon this. They have a commercial for their station that says "Christmas music sucks, this year more than ever".
I can't imagine how all the non-christians in my area (and there are a *lot* in NY/NJ) feel about this. Even though they throw Adam Sandler's "Hannukah Song" in every so often to be "balanced".

I so don't like Christmas music. They (stores, radio stations) started playing it before Thanksgiving around here, so I'm more than over it by now.
The one exception to this rule is the music from "The Nutcracker". Love that. But, as I'm currently in the middle of doing props for Central California Ballet's "Nutcracker" (two performances yesterday, two more coming up today, and a matinee tomorrow), I'll even be over that by the end of the run (that means tomorrow at approximately 4:30 p.m. PST).

I'll admit that I like Christmas music, though I haven't listened to it yet this year, I'll start when I'm actually home for christmas and trying to avoid studying for finals. I'll even agree that anyone who has a reasonably good voice ought to be allowed to sing Christmas songs. What they should not be allowed to do is to gratuituously change the song from the traditional arrangement. It drives me mad to hear someone sing a well known song then 'add' to it by holding a high note and adding all kinds of arias to show off how 'good' they are. I can't think of any specific instances, but I'm sure you know what I mean. Sometimes instead of ruining excellent carols, artists like to write their own new carols, which I like to encourage because it shows that they have the restraint not to ruin Silent Night, but these are often hit and miss in terms of quality. I think it is cruel to force people to listen to these poor covers by converting all of the radio stations to Christmas music. We would be better served by only changing a couple of them, and rigorously screening their programs for quality.

Agreed. I don't like all the showy vocal gyrations that are popular among divas right now. But I do like artists who add their own flavor to a cover in other ways. For instance, John Mellencamp's got a rockin' version of "I saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" that I just love, coplete with fiddles, accordions, and mandolins.

Ditto. Except these days I actually have 6 stations (3 primary and 3 secondary) in my rotation. This is mostly due to the fact that this station started doing all-Xmas songs from Thanksgiving on about 3 years ago. Before that, it was the ONLY station I listened to regularly. This year, they started a week before Thanksgiving.

Most are probably about as thrilled as I am. But at least in NJ/NY there are other options. I get to try to remember to grab cassettes and keep 'em in the car.

I can stand listening to this song about 3 times before I want desperately to NOT hear it again for another year. I like Sandler's idea -- reminding Jewish kids that there are other Jews out there. But Hollywood stars (and other celebs) aren't exactly who I'd choose as examples of Jewishness.

Stan, I saw Trans-Siberian Orchastra's Christmas show live this year. It was an absolutly amazing spectacle... I think one song used more electricity than I use in a decade. We were in the 47th row, and when the flash-pots went off we could feel waves of heat. There were fireworks, too, and fake snow. And lasers. LOTS of lasers.
The music, of course, was fabulous. But really the reason to see it live is to be repeatedly amazed and blinded by the light show.

Thanks for the good word, ElJay, I've been thinking about getting tickets the last couple years but keep procrastinating. This year they were sneaky and played out at Rosemont instead of at the Oriental in the Loop like they had the prior 2-3 years, and I dislike the Rosemont facility so that was my excuse this time LOL
