What do you consider the role of phonography to be in the musical relationship? Expansive or inconsequential?

In high school I heard a piece where someone arranged the sounds of stars into a slow musical experience. It was very hypnotic. I have always wanted to collect more phonographic sounds. I think phonography can really broaden my relationship to music.
