I hate insomnia. Really really really hate it. Hubby's in bed, lightly snoring, definitely getting his share of zzzs. And me?

I sit here with my laptop waiting for my sleeping pill to kick in. I don't take them very often - just when it's a bad insomnia night. Unfortunately, I've been having more and more of the bad insomnia nights lately.

Oh. The thought just occurred to me. It could be the time of year. I forgot. December and January were always the worst time of year for me emotionally, so maybe it's just unresolved goo from that.

Well, I'll have to ponder this and see if it fits. Although, considering it was the first thought to occur, it's also the most likely.

Now to solve this.

But meantime, you can certainly commisserate with me and generally feel sorry for me and send me presents to compensate for my terrible childhood Christmas experiences. [Big Grin] [Evil]

I recommend the album Little Lights by Kate Rusby, or Safe at Anchor by Kate Wolf. Those are the two most soothing, calming albums I know of. They're probably available for download somewhere if you want them.

I am a chronic insomniac. I also walk (and other things) in my sleep when I'm under stress.

I'm sorry you're having a rough time. Have you ever tried self-hypnosis? It sometimes works for me. (Of course, my dad started me on it when I was 2, so I was conditioned for it early.)

In the mean time:

*sings soothingly*

By yon bonny banks and by yon bonny braes
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond,
There me and my true love were ever wont to be,
By the bonny, bonny banks of Loch Lomond.

Oh, you'll take the high road, and I'll take the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye,
But me and my true love will never meet again
By the bonny, bonny banks of Loch Lomond.

I mind where we parted by yon shady glen
On the steep, steep sides of Ben Lomond
Where in deep purple hue the Hi'land hills we'd view
And the moon coming out in the gloaming.

Oh, you'll take the high road, and I'll take the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye,
But me and my true love will never meet again
By the bonny, bonny banks of Loch Lomond.

The wee birdies sing and the wildflowers spring
And in sunshine the waters are sleeping,
But the broken heart can ken no second spring again,
And the world does not know how we're greeting.

Oh, you'll take the high road, and I'll take the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye,
But me and my true love will never meet again
By the bonny, bonny banks of Loch Lomond.

That is such a sad song. [Cry]

ketchupqueen, thanks for the beautiful song. You're so sweet!

I'll have to see about downloading those albums - thanks for the suggestions. No, I haven't tried self-hypnosis. Or, maybe I have and it didn't work. I forget. I have an extremely difficult time relaxing and/or meditating - childhood related programming is the short version. And I am a very light sleeper. And I have sleep disorders. But the sleep disorders are, theoretically, caused by the high stress loads I experienced as a child. Sigh.

I sleep better now than I ever have ever before in my entire life, and that happened after I moved here and got married. Lucky side affect. But still, it's a challenge. Last night, I solved it with pills, but I hate doing that. I'd rather have a permanent solution that didn't involve drugs, even if I'm lucky enough to find sleeping pills that work on me and aren't addictive or have known long term side effects. [Wall Bash]

Ah well. The joys.

ooo ooo ooo!
Kate Rusby and Kate Wolf! *happy bouncing*
Did you try maybe, chamomile tea, or hot milk and honey?
There are herbs that induce sleep to..., Plus physical activity before bed, hot baths... Reading... Soothing nice music... Like slow Yoko Kanno songs.

And that was a great book I should read again.

Unfortunately, is she's anything like me, the herbs probably won't help, nor will exercise, etc.

I know where you're coming from; that sounds creepily like my childhood. I've experienced insomnia since before I can remember, tension headaches and a sore back since age 7 (at least), and I have abandonment issues. Among other things. My husband is very good about it.

I hope I don't screw up my own kids. [Frown]

Synesthesia, you like Kate Rusby and Kate Wolf? [Embarrassed] I thought I was the only person under the age of 25 outside my family that knew them. Do you know Iris DeMent? Connie Dover? Battlefield Band?

Exercise within 6 or 8 hours of sleep makes things worse. I can't consume caffeine in any form after 12 noon or it keeps me awake for hours. Herbs and herb teas such as chamomile, valerian didn't work - at all. Melatonin doesn't do a damn thing except make me want to fall asleep at 2 in the afternoon.

Um, what else?

I've read many many books on insomnia and sleep disorders. I've paid attention to all the stuff about temperature - not too hot, not too cold, light - not too light, not too dark, noise, comfortable bed and pillow, non-chafing or binding clothes, being consistent when I go to bed and get up. . . and the list goes on. I've tried everything that the sleep experts have suggested. I just like to whine and complain. [Big Grin] Okay, I don't, but dammit, if ya give me a reason. . .

I slept mostly okay last night. Until the mosquitoes came out to play. We thought we didn't have any under the net - we check every night before shutting off the light - but either we missed 2, or they found a way in. And both hubby and I woke up from multiple mosquito bites. Nasty side effect of life in the tropics. Anyway. Took me another hour or so to fall asleep after that. And then the alarm starts going off and I have to pay attention to that cuz it's Sunday and I HAVE to be at church. Sigh.

I think it's depressing. It's so depressing I can't even listen to it. [Angst]

I have heard of Iris DeMent.
I got into Kate Rusby because I like celtic type music.
She has the cutest Yorkshire accent. Adorable.
A rather handsome guy hooked me up with Kate Wolf music.
I need to hear more of it, but i lost my tape decks..
Do you like Karen Casey formally of Solas? I love her. She sounds a bit like Kate Rusby with that sweet tasty lilting kind of voice.

Yes, I do. Check this out: Kate Wolf on CD, cheap. Not all of them are still available, but Safe at Anchor (my favorite) is!

We have a Dutch saying for something that doesn't bother you. If something doesn't bother you, you say 'Oh, this doesn't keep me awake'

Now I had this relative with insomnia and I was informing about it, asking her if she slept well that night and she said 'Oh no, I didn't sleep well but Ginette, a sleepless night doesn't keep me awake'.
