I've really been enjoying watching each of the episodes with her. I'm really happy she likes it, because there aren't many activities that my mother and I can share. My dad and I have sports -- we watch the New Zealand rugby on Sunday mornings and we watch tennis, golf, swimming, and athletics whenever that stuff is on TV. Even though he's 78 and not in the best of health, he's been teaching me how to play squash recently. But mum and I don't have anything like that now that I'm too independently minded to be mothered much.

One afternoon a couple of weeks ago I found myself with nothing to do, so I popped in Shindig. Not one of my favourite episodes by any stretch, but a nice mindless one that, unlike my favourite episodes (the last three) is not brutally heartbreaking. Mum came in and sat down and we watched it together, with me explaining who everyone was and what was going on. I suggested she watch the first episode to see if she liked it, so we did. And she did. [Smile] Since then, we've been watching them in order.

Today we watched The Message, which always leaves me mellow. The music is just too good. And I know what's coming, of course, though mum doesn't. I find Heart of Gold as heartbreaking as The Message, and Objects in Space, while not quite so deadly, still leaves me fairly mellow (partly because it's the last one, I guess). I'm curious to see how mum will feel after the last two episodes.

But fortunately we won't run out of things to do together after Firefly is done, because she wants to watch the extended editions of the LotR movies with me (I have the first two on DVD and asked for the third for Christmas). I'm looking forward to that, too, because I grew up on LotR and fantasy and I'd really enjoy sharing my love for it with mum.

I have to say, though, that sharing Firefly is even more personal, at least for me. I've watched the Firefly DVDs more than everything in the rest of my movie collection put together, because every time I show an episode to someone new we have to watch all of them in sequence. Every time I catch new things, and, more importantly, every time I still feel that same rush of emotions, even though I know what's coming when I get to The Message.

Normally that kind of mellow feeling gets me writing music. Often, after finishing a particularly powerful book or watching an excellent movie, I find an instrument and devise a new melody. But after watching The Message today, all I could do was diddle around with the musical themes from it. I'm not sure I have a melody in me, at this point, that could do justice to it. Because my formal musical training is incomplete, theory and melody are not second nature to me, I just put my hands on the instrument and play whatever comes out. The theory of harmony was never ingrained in me, it never became second nature, so I lack the musical vocabulary to express what I feel.

Which is somewhat disconcerting. I'm not used to that.

We'll see how I feel after the next two episodes. [Smile]

I haven't seen Firefly. I've only heard of it here. And that has me sad. I think I'm gonna have to hunt for downloads. [Razz]

Good friends of mine are really into Firefly. I will have to give it a try.

I think it is great that you can share something important to you with your mother. I know that my mother really appreciates it when I can share something about myself with her.

My mum appreciates it too. Relations between us have been somewhat strained lately, and this is helping quite a bit on that score as well. [Smile]

Realtions between my mother and I have been a bit strained for a while(a very long story). Recently we have been able to have good conversations, and I have been able to appreciate her more. I think it has been good for both of us.
