According to the ancient Celts (and modern neo-pagans and Wiccans) today is the day the Holly King (who presides over the harvest and the beginning of winter) is defeated by the Oak King (who presides over the spring and planting) signifying that henceforth the days will begin to lengthen again. We also know it as the Winter Solstice. I think Yule is my favorite winter holiday, simply because I like the word, and the mythology.
