Very sad, indeed.
Sara, am I dreaming when I think that football players tend to die young, because their bulk turns to fat and strains their hearts? I thought I had heard that a long time ago.

There is also the fact that a lot of them take banned substances...not that I am implying Reggie did....and that leads to a higher fatatility rate too.

Kwea, while I'm sure lots of professional athletes take steroids, I don't know if that's necessarily true of White. I think it has more to do with the fact that he's friggin' huge and is no longer working out year-round (or nearly so). My bet is just that he let his body go and his heart followed. Fifteen years of professional sports (and who knows how many in college and before) and then nothing can do a lot to a person.

The FoxSports article linked in the original post cited "respiratory distress caused by sleep apnea". Now my dad's starting to freak a bit again because (1) he has suffered from S.A. for a long time and was finally diagnosed about a year ago and (2) he won Trivial Pursuit last night on a question about Reggie White. {insert Twilight Zone theme music here}

I'm wondering why White died of sleep apnea, when that is such a treatable thing - with CPAP machines and all....

My husband wouldn't go to the doctor for a long time to see about it. It wasn't till after I was ready to kill him from lack of sleep and he had really sore ribs ( [Wink] ) that he finally went. Actually, what really sent him was losing his voice for 3 months and a nagging cough that would cut off his air supply long enough to knock him out, which we found amusing, but he hated the bruises and cuts on his face. Anyway, the doctor diagnosed severe acid reflux, but told him a lot of the problem could also be he sleep and ordered a sleep study. The doctor that did the sleep study said getting a cpap machine probably saved his life, that's how bad his apnea was.

Long story short, men are surprisingly stubborn about doctors.

As I said, I wasn't implying anything about him, just about the fatality rate of big football players.

Roids make you big, which stresses everything out. Also, muscle mass deteriorates into fat once it isn't maintained....
