I'm here in Utah to welcome my baby brother home from his mission. He came off the plane in a perfectly-tailored pinstrip suit and with a Mexican accent. The suit he got from a seamstress down there, and the accent he got from over a year of native companions.
He looks just the same, and Steven has always been the sweetest, gentlest, most easygoing person I knew, so that hasn't changed at all. Steve's the kind of person who has never met a stranger and has never met anyone he didn't like, and no doubt that served him well in Mexico City. He's filled with stories of people that he loved down there, and he's so humble and so sweet. Some missionaries come home a little wierd (I sure was - and the weirdness lasted almost six months.), but he's slipped right into things. He's a little more sensitive to things that could offend the spirit, but mostly he's the same - quietly confident about himself, his place in the world, and very sure of being loved.
He freely admits that it wasn't the best two years. He's not sentimental at all, and he's had a nice life - most of his years have been pretty good. We laughed about being a dork for the Lord, and he definitely had a few moments of "WHAT am I DOING - it's 100 degrees, I'm in a white shirt and tie, and we just got stood up for the fourth time today!" Despite that, he did love it, and he did it well, the way he does everything. (It's possible I'm slightly biased.)
I made a 12-foot yellow banner with "Welcome Home Steve" that can be seen from down the hill. It's nice to have him home. Posts: 26077 | Registered: Mar 2000

There was a crowd at his homecoming, and for me it was like meeting the ghosts of Christmas Past. There were so many people that I used to know, but I knew them when I was an entirely different person. Very odd.
