Ok, so I'm a Junior in high school. and I'm narrowing down my chooses of post secondary educational institutions. I'm going to major in Technical Theatre/Theatre Design and Technology. I've narrowed down my choices to my top 16 choices.
These choices are:
Boston University
Columbia College, Chicago
Emerson College
Fitchburg State College
Florida State University
Indiana University, Bloomington
Ithaca College
Ohio University
Oklahoma City University
Purchase College, State University of New York
Syracuse University
Texas Tech University
The Pennsylvania State University, University Park Campus
The University of Akron
The University of Arizona
Yale University
I don't particularly think I can make it into some of these institutions of higher learning, but I'm thinking about applying just for the fun of it (if I apply early enough most schools wave the application fees). Ok, now lets pretend like I have the money, and grades to go to any of these schools, which ones should I not bother applying to?

well thats one of the downsides to the degree that I want, it literally takes over your life, for four years you are more or less slave labor... but ya... I'm looking for a school that has a well known program, and none of the instructors know who my dad is (this is hard, since he wrote the textbooks that most rigging classes use). I just want to get out on my own i guess, so umm... a school with a good social scene would be nice...
none of this is helpful, but umm... ya...

Chicago always has a social scene. I'd say go to school in Wisconsin, but we lack two important things: 1)any notoriety in your potential major, and 2)anything that would make anyone that doesn't already live in Wisconsin want to go to school here.
The important questions to ask yourself are about whether you like big cities or small towns, what kind of social scene you want, how modern or traditional you want the school to be, etc. I hope that helps

Granted, I didn't even apply to the school I'm attending until March of my senior year. But still, you're a junior.
I would advise not going to Ithica, when I visited it gave me very bad vibes. Zeugma lives around there, though, so she might know better than me.

When I was in high school, I looked at schools my junior year and applied the beginning of my senior. Granted, my search wasn't all that comprehensive, but I'm happy with where I ended up.

Well, I don't know any of those colleges, but my boss' son is getting a degree in Theatre, and I know he had it narrowed down to Ok. City Univ., De Paul(?) and NYU in New York. He interviewed with all of those and eventually chose NYU and really loves it there.
But I have no idea it that is helpful to you or not. I had no idea so many universities offered a theatre program...

Columbia because Chicago is a wonderful place with lots of theater and museums and other cool stuff to do... and it has BannaOj and Xnera and Vana and sndrake and me! (and I know there's at least one other Hatracker here, but I'm blanking on names, sorry you!!)

Plus you're in Florida in a college town with more women that men attending the school. We're only an hour away from the Gulf of Mexico and three hours from the Atlantic. It's not quite subtropical here in Tally, but the weather's not bad. A bit cooler than I like and no sea breeze in the summer, but acceptable.
Plus, we have a student gaming organization, the Renegade Gaming Society. Chet's the player liason, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask. Tally has plenty to offer including a great theater program. Look into it.
I'm not real sure about that school Dag, I mean their web site did a whole lot of "we're the best" talk and not a whole lot of information.... But I will look into it more.
Blacwolve, I'm looking at colleges now, because if i apply over the summer, 12 of my original 15 will wave the application fees.

I went to the college that paid me the most money. That was nice, and as it turns out it was the best University in the WORLD!

Funny, Annie, I didn't know you went to UVA.
Both times I chose UVA they were the only ones not offering me money.
As an undergrad, the money offered by Carnegie Mellon didn't make up for the difference between cost of attending and the in-state tuition at UVA. For law school, GMU and Wasington-Lee would have been cheaper, Duke more expensive, even with the financial aid.

I would recommend talking to someone, or a few people, who know about the programs at the different schools. When I was picking a music school talking to my bass teacher really helped. She knows most of the bass teachers in the US, and it was nice to have her input on what working with them would be like. It was helpful to talk to someone who told me more about the program then I would have found out with a visit. It was a good way to narrow my search down.
I would also recommend visiting all the colleges you can. It is the best way to get a feel for the area, the people, and all of the other important things.
This is how I did it and I feel pretty good about the choices I have now.

Thanks, Allegra. You reminded me, I'm going to be hanging out with a friend who does technical stuff for FSU's theater dept. His wife does something similar over at the civic center. I'll ask them where they would go if they could go anywhere they wanted to.
Now if I don't lose my to do list, I should have an update Monday.

One of your criteria is that the proffessor's don't know your dad, so wouldn't it help that your dad wasn't one of them? I didn't look up all of them, but Columbia in Chicago sounds interesting, and think how much closer to wisconsin it puts you? Posts: 5362 | Registered: Apr 2004
