Haven't heard an update from you on the whole tsunami situation in a little while, and was just wondering about it. I read an article yesterday saying that the international relief community had done a good enough job of getting clean water to strickened populations throughout South and Southeast Asia to significantly diminish the threat of waterbourne disease in the both regions, which was encouraging.

By the way, a coworker sent me this. Probably the best set of before and after photos of areas struck by the tsunami that I've seen.

Well, I was wondering that yesterday as well, and very concerned, mainly due to this:
Malaria Threat

And my concern is not just for the malaria -- but do they KNOW how bad prolonged exposure to massive amount of these insecticides are? Man -- disease is as bad as the cure! And even those who may not be weak enough to be a probable malaria candidate -- those people will have no choice but to be exposed to high doses of this legal toxin, which kills much more than mosquitoes...

FG

(look at the photo at that link -- a guy in protective gear and face mask handling the chemical, while right next time him is a young child sucking his finger -- nothing protecting any of them at all as it is being applied to all surfaces.)

Malaria is always a threat here, as is dengue fever. Granted, it varies depending on area, rain patterns, plants, standing water, and things like that.

The biggest problem, as I see it, in Sri Lanka are lack of communication, lack of centralized information, and the Tamil Tigers not letting people in to do their relief effort jobs.

There have also been, more recently, a lot of reports of the Tamil Tigers recruiting 1800 children into their military. There was a report of a 63 year old man trying to sell his two granddaughters since his daughter is dead. Nine women are all claiming "Baby 81" as their child. Many reports of children, orphaned by the tsunami or separated from their parents, being stolen by now-childless parents. Land mines in many areas were uncovered and are wreaking havoc on relief efforts.

There are a lot of volunteers, and many are gawkers - not here to help, but rather to view the carnage. That never helps. And even with those who are here legitimately, things are a disorganized mess. Although if you read only the official government reports, everything is going fine. Who to believe? Personally, I opt for believing that the President continues to be crazy.

Death toll in Sri Lanka is now at 30,920.
