Ok, I am huge fan of the books, hell I even named myself after one of the characters. Whos son kicks major a$$ by the way. But anyway, I was wondering if there is a release date for the fourth installment that somehow I missed. Help me. And after maybe we can turn this into a thread about the books.

Nope.

He's not even done writing it. He has started updating his site with progress reports, but my own opinion is that its only half done about [Frown] .

www.georgerrmartin.com

Ignore Amazon and anyone else's release dates.

Yesterday I finished another chapter, the thirty-second (though I do move these chapters around from time to time, so it probably won't be the thirty-second when FEAST is finally published). It's an Alayne chapter, and with it in place, I now have 738 manuscript pages in something very close to final draft form. I also have four or five additional chapters, roughly another 100 pages, that are close to completion, and then maybe another 100 to 200 pages of fragmentary chapters, scenes, lines, and notes, some of which will wind up in FEAST, some of which may be pushed into the next volume, of some of which will likely be scrapped. So that's where I am right now.
Considering he's read or released about 20 chapters at Cons and stuff, that seems like bad news to me.

Best places for news of the release date are his website, the Song of Ice and Fire message board, and Westeros.org. Do check out So Spake Martin at Westeros; it's quite fascinating, and gives hints of future events. (Spoiler phobes will want to stay away). Westeros and the message board are run by Ran (Elio M. Garcia), who is probably the biggest fan of the series and who communicates frequently with GRRM. Ran will be one of the first people to know when a due date is firmed up.

As previously mentioned, there is still no firm due date. But you can read a sample chapter at GRRM's website, and an excerpt was previously published in an issue of Dragon magazine. Also, another Dunk and Egg story is due to be published in the next edition of Legends. Not sure when that will be out; it may have been publishes already, actually.

I go to his website from time to time, but other than that, haven't been paying real close attention to things that he's said about Feast.

My personal opinion is that Feast is going to be the jumping off point for another trilogy. I just can't see all the plot threads introduced in the first three wrapped up in one book if he procedes at his current pace. So he has to take his time to make sure he gets all his duckies in a row.

So, bad news that Feast is taking so long to come out. But I think the good news (hopefully) will be that there will be other books in the franchise and they will be coming out in short order as he will have a framework to work off of.

Personally, I am hoping we have a closer look at The Citadel of Maesters in Old Town (the citadel referenced in passing in one of the books as being the tallest man-made structure in Westeros) and the silent society of women who carry away the dead. What with the, er, grave turns the third book took, I can definitely see possible plot tie-ins with them.

It's not supposed to be a trilogy.

Also, the thread title gets the series' name wrong. [Taunt]

I think that the fact that there is a fourth book coming out is a pretty strong indicator that it's not a trilogy, EG. But thanks for the heads up. [Smile] (Edit: Reread my post and I didn't phrase it very well. I see how it could have been construed that I thought it was a trilogy. Pardon, EG. [Smile] )

Now, the question is, does anyone know how many books there are supposed to be in the whole Song of Ice and Fire series?

I believe there are now supposed to be 5. He was aiming for 3, missed that by a long shot, and is now heading for 5. I think.

Originally it was supposed to be three or four books long. I know for quite a while he was saying it'd be four. Then maybe a year or so ago there were a bunch of interviews where he was adamant that it would be SIX, and not a book more. Though Parris keeps saying it'll be seven. I haven't kept up with the fandom as much as I used to, so I'm not sure if GRRM himself has said yet whether it will be six or seven books.

BOOK TITLES BELOW! SPOILERY!

I do know that A Feast for Crows was unplanned -- originally there was going to be a five year gap between A Storm of Swords and the next book, originally planned to be called "A Dance with Dragons". Then one of the character's demanded that his story be told (almost GRRM's exact words) so now there's no five year gap. Because of this, I believe the series may end up to be seven books.

IIRC, the books after A Feast for Crows are supposed to be titled "A Dance with Dragons", "The Winds of Winter" and "A Time for Wolves". Not sure about that second one. I know ADwD is a pretty set title.

Yes, 7 seems likely right now. Its more than he originally wanted, but Martin knows pretty much everything thats going to happen from now till the series closes, so its not likely to baloon up like the clunkers WOT or SOT.

If you want to check out some awesome fan art, go to www.amoka.net. His portraits are really something, and even Martin says that a lot of them were exactly how he pictured them.

Oh and beware the forum listed by xnera, as there are tons of spoilers for AFFC, as well as some theories bordering on spoilers with how plausible they are.

The gallery was nice. Thanks. [Smile] I really do not think Jaime Lannister is that lithe, nor Tyrion that slight, if you know what I mean. On that note, many of his men are too...unathletic?...for my taste to really fit the role of tourneys and battles that they seem to constantly occupy in the books. The Mellisandre pictured on the covers is much closer to the character than his.

That said, I think all the potraits are well done. Though they're all well drawn, I think my favorite so far is Brienne of Tarth.

Interesting funfact: Jenny Gardner is in a writers group with George R. R. Martin, and I think S.M. Stirling and Walter Jon Williams. How cool is that?

So you're saying OUR JENNY is holding up Song of Ice and Fire? Hrm. We should do something about that.
