I need to replace my Tungsten E and am trying to decide whether to just get another or upgrade to the 5 which is faster, has a longer-life battery, and can be used as a flash drive. Also, it costs exactly twice as much money.
I'm sticking with the Palm OS, but I'm curious if anyone here has direct experience with these beasties.

I have a Tungsten C, and I love it. Of course, it's my first and only palm, so it may just be that I love having a palm.
The Tungsten 5 wasn't out yet when I chose the C, so I'm not as familiar with it. I like the C because of the built in wireless card and the key board pad. The keypad's a personal preference thing though, I know several people who like graffiti better. The extra memory on the C is nice as well.

My friend has thus insane Sony Clie of some kind... it open like a tiny laptop (but you can rotate the screen around and fold it back down and just use it w/out the little keyboard if you want)
I don't know the model number but it's got all kinds of features... wireless interent (Wi-FI), a camera, microphone (voice memos), and is just generaly awesome. He got it for half price by buying a floor model from a closing circuit city.
If you don't mind using something that isn't brand new, you can get some really good deals on ebay on this kind of stuff

Ic, mine fits in my purse, and weighs a few ounces.

Cheaper than similar Pocket PCs, Wordsmith outperforms every PDA word processor I've tried, and Microsoft's ebook format annoys me like you wouldn't believe. I understand this. But can't this become something like an evolutionary dead end? Sticking with your Betamax because you don't want to replace your old movies?
Everything I've heard in the last year or so has led me to believe that Pocket PCs were pretty much taking over the market.

Basically, Palm is still #1, but has lost some market share to RIM (which now has a respectable bit under a fifth of the market), and MS is still in about the same place (which is unsurprising, really, there's a far more significant hurdle to switch from Windows CE to RIM or Palm OS than between the latter two).

I realize it's about looking at the same data and spinning it two different ways, but Pocket PC shipments in Q1 2004 (for whatever that's worth) increased (4%), while Palm shipments decreased (20%). And yeah, Blackberries increased a lot more, but they seem to be cutting into Palm, not really into Pocket PCs.

I hadn't heard that Palm was suffering, they sold the Tungsten E like hotcakes and they've been doing pretty well with the Treo series.
Not that big a deal. My biggest problem would be my library, and eReader makes a version that can read Palm books on a PocketPC. Just not much reason to switch, really.
