I don't really know, but my Korean roommates cooked and ate it tonight. I almost threw up from the smell.

The dead fish is probably dead fish. I'd guess that what you're calling an "unwashed gym shorts" smell is some sort of fermented cabbage.

I had a friend who went on a mission to Korea, and he got me hooked on the stuff. It's an acquired taste, but delicious.

Some cooked fish does not smell fishy. Some smells just like a fish lying dead on the beach for a week. Why is that?

Agreed, sarcasticmuppet. In fact, that's how I feel about kim chee, too. Fresh, it's wonderful. Canned, I tend to puke.

Kimchi I can handle. This stuff...*cringe* It left me and my other american roommate struggling for ways to escape the stench. I think it was squid or something like that.
