This is driving me crazy, who's the fantasy author that you love?

Sean Russle, I'm sure. Second only to Piers Anthony in Tom's book.

*blink* It's like being asked "what's the kind of ice cream you like?"

But I'm going to go out on a limb and say Tad Williams, not because he's necessarily my favorite fantasy author but because it's what people would say I would say. [Smile]

That was it! I was trying to think of the name to tell someone and I drew a complete blank. Thanks!

Never mind, just answered my own question.

Tom, I need a Tad Williams " Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn" caliber finite fantasy series. Which one should I try next?

Does it have to be a series? Because, if not, you will never forgive yourself for not reading Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. And it's just the one really huge-ass book.

Huge-ass is fine. It just can't be Jordanesquely interminable.
Thanks.

Is this one of those books that's so large that as you begin to measure the number of pages more exactly you can no longer quite tell how wide each page is?

That's right, you betrayers of Uncle Orson!

I want everyone who claimed enjoyment of another author in this thread to say 13 Hail Enders and report to the rectory for cleaning duty.

I am so sorry, Annie! I am off to follow the pattern on my orange and brown 1970's-patterned kitchen floor, as there is not enough room in the bedroom to follow the wood grain.

Dagnabbit. Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell was not at the store, and I did not want to get Otherland until I heard more Hatracian chat on it. So, I got the fourth Rhapsody book and a Knights of the Templar mystery which looked really fun.

Otherland's worth a read, Liz, although it's not a fantasy and is quite different in tone from Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn. It also features the best character name ev-ar.

Is it sci fi? (I actually like DD Shade's list of speculative fic categories)

It's a cyberpunk framing story built around literally dozens of smaller genre novels. [Smile] It was written so Tad could play with other settings without having to write whole books about 'em.

Hmmm. Somewhere along the lines, I must have gotten confused about Tom's taste in authors. If pressed, I would have said Stephen R Donaldson. Perhaps I was confusing Tom with someone else, but that seems so difficult to do...

I also like Donaldson's stuff, although not his novel-length fantasy.
