I was working out this morning, listening to my MP3 player as usual. I haven't heard ALL the songs I have on there. I heard a song by Weezer (Weezer's great workout music, BTW. So is Reel Big Fish ) called Why bother? It was one of those songs that just kinda put everything I was feeling perfectly. Mostly about dating right now...Here's the chorus (Hopefully you get my meaning...)
quote: Why bother? It's gonna hurt me It's gonna kill when you desert me This happened to me twice before Won't happen to me anymore
Now, it seems like my favorite songs have always been ones that had lyrics that perfectly fit what I was feeling when I actually HEARD the lyrics rather than just grooving to the music. This happened with Blues Traveler's "Just Wait" and Reel Big Fish's "Brand New Hero". So I guess the point here is, have YOU had musical experiences like this? If so, what was the song? (You can even post some of the more potent lyrics if you like)

Often I have this, but, music is my obsession and my soundtrack. For example, I have a whole bunch of songs I loved when I harped on some foolish boy back in 2001. I was relieved not to lose these songs like- All I Want where Joni Mitchell has this perfect cute lyric, " I wanna shampoo you." So freaking adorable. Then you have Magdelena by A Perfect Circle- "I'd sell my soul, my self esteem a dollar at a time." Hyperballad by Bjork-"I go through all this before I wake up. So I can feel happier, to be safe again with you." Then you have 2003 Tori Amos-"If the rain has to separate from itself does it say pick out your cloud?" Zero 7- Destiny "When I'm weak I draw stregth from you. When you're lost I know how to change your mood." "Zero 7-Home, reminds me of how I felt in NY back in 2001-"Make me somewhere I can call a home, 'cause lately I've been losing all my own." And then you have this song that is called Rain by Patty Larkin I think? Reminds me of Hook... And a tons more like Sarah McLachlan's I do what I have to do.

Hooray for harping on a favourite band, but this is from Carbon Leaf's "One Prairie Outpost":
quote:Not been here since I was a boy The sky unwrapped, the world my toy A movie reel, a million miles long On and on and
Scene after scene passes by my life The window's a wound The road is a knife The irony asked me Where have you been? I don't know I don't know Because I don't know where to begin
Too much to do too much to see Pictures to take people to meet When there's so much space in between It overwhelms me
And so many more where that came from... Yet another reason why I love them so dang much!

Kate Wolf touches something in my soul. Good examples of lyrics that say what I feel by her are "Give Yourself to Love", "These Times We're Living In", "Shining!", and "Here In California".

Most of my music does not have lyrics, but I once had amazing experience with the Bach cello suites. I was listening to them while working out and I felt like as the song was progressing I was getting closer and closer to heaven, or bliss or something. When it got to the climax I really felt like I was in heaven. It was wonderful. It has happened to me a few times since as well. It did not exactly perfectly describe how I was felling, but it took me exactly where i needed to go.

Let's see. There was a time when The Wallflower's Closer To You applied to me.. Now it applies again, sorta.
quote: How soft a whisper can get When you’re walking through a crowded space I hear every word being said And I remember that everyday I get a little bit closer to you
How long an hour can take When you’re starting into open space When I feel I’m slipping further away I remember that everyday I get a little bit closer to you
...
You know there’s nowhere else I’ve wanted to be Than be there when you need me I’m sorry too But don’t give up on me And just remember that when you were asleep I got a little bit closer to you
Also, not long after that, the song It's Good to Be In Love by Frou Frou fit me best.
quote: I don't know where to start Say I'm tired or throw a party These cucumber eyes are lying the more that I smile about it And all of my clothes feel like somebody's old throwaways I don't like it
It's good to be in love It really does suit you Just like everything I'm happy you're in love 'Cause every color goes where you do
...
I feel so powerless I've got to stop it somehow Oh come on what can I do? Why's it happening How's it happening without me Why's it happening How's it happening that he feels it without me
And my best friend sent me a song that I felt really fit the relationship between us. It was Green Eyes by Coldplay.
quote: Honey you are a rock Upon which I stand And I come here to talk I hope you understand
That green eyes Yeah the spotlight shines upon you And how could anybody deny you I came here with a load And it feels so much lighter Now I met you And honey you should know That I could never go on without you Green eyes
Honey you are the sea Upon which I float And I came here to talk I think you should know
That green eyes You’re the one that I wanted to find And anyone who tried to deny you Must be out of their mind
Because I came here with a load And it feels so much lighter Since I met you And honey you should know That I could never go on without you Green eyes Green eyes
It happens from time to time, but more often I remember a song and want to download or listen to it...

There is a Crow Greenspun(obscure artist) song that was the first of his I had heard. It hit me so hard I just started bawling, because it was about his dad, who had died. It was right before he had his first baby. It is a hard time for people who have lost parents, and it just said it all for me.

At some point in high school/college I though Johnny B by the Hooters summed up my life perfectly.
quote:It's a sleepless night, She's callin' your name It's a lonely ride, I know how you want her Again and Again, you're chasin' a dream yeah But Johnny my friend, she's not what she seems
Johnny B, how much there is to see Just open your eyes and listen to me Straight ahead, a green light turns to red Oh why can't you see, oh Johnny B
And when you drive her home, is she sittin' real close Does she make you weak, well that's the way that she wants you You're strung out again, she's taken you over You've been here before, why can't you let go

I think most of my outlook on life is summed up by these two lines from Rush's "Resist":
quote:You can surrender without a prayer, but never really pray without surrender. You can fight without ever winning, but never, ever, win without a fight

One of the best descriptions of depression I've ever heard, and also one of my very favorite bands.
quote: When the little things are tearing you apart They should have warned you This is how it starts An answering machine that only speaks the truth The inclination climb upon the roof The endless shrink parade The nights that never cease And all you want is peace But all you get is pills And still they tell you
Psychopharmacology is gonna be your friend When you can't get out of bed and you're so tired of pretending Psychopharmacology is gonna save your soul 'Cause God is great and God is good but he's also made of wood Believe in psychopharmacology
Tonight you terrorize your friends They should have warned you This is how it ends But the thing you can't accept Is this is all you get You just want a second chance But all you get is pills And still they tell you
Psychopharmacology is gonna set you straight When you're forgetting all your lines And you can't buy your own disguises Psychopharmacology will break that thorny crown Before you take that rifle down Before you load that final round Remember psychopharmacology will turn your life around
Psychopharmacology is gonna be your friend When you can't get out of bed And you're so tired of pretending Psychopharmacology is gonna save your soul 'Cause God is great and God is good but he's also made of wood Psychopharmacology...

My Life in the Knife Trade by BoySetsFire mirrored my emotions for an entire winter. Suffering by Satchel is another song mirrored my emotions pretty damn well that same winter. and many other songs from that winter did the exact same thing...hmmm...Good Life by Weezer was another one.

quote:When you see the Southern Cross for the first time, You understand now why you came this way, 'Cause the truth you might be runnin' from is so small, But it's as big as the promise, the promise of a coming day.
There are places I remember all my life, Though some have changed, Some forever, not for better, Some have gone and some remain. All these places had their moments With lovers and friends I still can recall. Some are dead and some are living. In my life I've loved them all.
But of all these friends and lovers, There is no one compares with you, And these memories lose their meaning When I think of love as something new. Though I know I'll never lose affection For people and things that went before, I know I'll often stop and think about them, In my life I'll love you more.

Have You Forgotten? (Darryl Worley/Wynn Varble)
I hear people saying we don't need this war I say there's some things worth fighting for What about our freedom and this piece of ground We didn't get to keep 'em by backing down They say we don't realize the mess we're getting in Before you start your preaching let me ask you this my friend
Have you forgotten how it felt that day? To see your homeland under fire And her people blown away Have you forgotten when those towers fell? We had neighbors still inside going thru a living hell And you say we shouldn't worry 'bout bin Laden Have you forgotten?
They took all the footage off my T.V. Said it's too disturbing for you and me It'll just breed anger that's what the experts say If it was up to me I'd show it everyday Some say this country's just out looking for a fight After 9/11 man I'd have to say that's right
Have you forgotten how it felt that day? To see your homeland under fire And her people blown away Have you forgotten when those towers fell? We had neighbors still inside going thru a living hell And you say we shouldn't worry 'bout bin Laden Have you forgotten?
I've been there with the soldiers Who've gone away to war And you can bet that they remember Just what they're fighting for
Have you forgotten how it felt that day? To see your homeland under fire And her people blown away Have you forgotten when those towers fell? We had neighbors still inside going thru a living hell And you say we shouldn't worry 'bout bin Laden Have you forgotten?
Have you forgotten all the people killed? Some went down like heros in that Pennsylvania field Have you forgotten about our Pentagon? All the loved ones that we lost and those left to carry on Don't you tell me not to worry about bin Laden Have you forgotten?

One song in particular spoke to me when I was very depressed after a long term relationship came to bad end...this song was almost scary with how accurate it reflected my feelings / thoughts.
It is "She was the One" by Peter Holsapple / Chris Stamey. You can find it on this album .
This was quite awhile ago...but when I hear this song today it still has the power to make me very sad.

In answer to Boris' first post: Yeah, it happens to me all the time. I always like to understand the lyrics and there are many songs that I started to like because of the lyrics. And I totally relate what's in the songs with stuff from my life. I don't know if you read my landmark , but guess what makes the "outline": music.

How about this one for "parents' expectations":
quote: Sometimes is never quite enough If you're flawless, then you'll win my love Don't forget to win first place Don't forget to keep that smile on your face
Be a good boy Try a little harder You've got to measure up And make me prouder
How long before you screw it up How many times do I have to tell you to hurry up With everything I do for you The least you can do is keep quiet
-Alanis Morissette, "Perfect"
I soooo felt like this at some time in my life. After always being among the best I started going down a little and my parents did what I never thought they'd do: "politely" (= annoyingly) ask me why I don't get better grades... There were some reasons for this, but still it bugged the hell out of me.

I’m just tryin’ to be a father, raise a daughter and a son Be a lover to their mother, everythin’ to everyone Up and at ‘em bright and early, I’m all business in my suit Yeah I’m dressed up for success, from my head down to my boots I don’t do it for money, there’s bills I that I can’t pay I don’t do it for the glory, I just do it anyway Providing for our future’s, my responsibility Yeah I’m real good under pressure, being all that I can be And I can’t call in sick on Mondays when the weekend’s been too strong I just work straight through the holidays, and sometimes all night long You can bet that I stand ready, when the wolf growls at the door Hey I’m solid, hey I’m steady, hey I’m true down to the core.
And I will always do my duty no matter what the price I’ve counted up the cost, I know the sacrifice Oh and I don’t want to die for you, but if dyin’s asked of me I’ll bear that cross with honor, cause freedom don’t come free.
I’m an American Soldier an American Beside my brothers and my sisters, I will proudly take a stand When liberty’s in jeopardy, I will always do what’s right
I’m out here on the front lines, sleep in peace tonight American Soldier, I’m and American, Soldier.

American girls and American guys We'll always stand up and salute We'll always recongnize When we see Old Glory flying there's alot of men dead So we can sleep in peace at night when we lay down our head
My daddy served in the Army when he lost his right eye But he flew a flag out in our yard till the day that he died He wanted my mother, my brother, my sister, and me To grow up and live happy in the land of the free Now this nation that I love has fallen under attack A mighty sucker punch came flying in from somewhere in the back Soon as we could see clearly through our big, black eye Man,we lite up your world like the 4th of July
Uncle Sam put your name at the top of his list And the Statue of Liberty started shaking her fist And the eagle will fly and its gonna be hell When you hear Mother Freedom start ringing her bell And it'll feel like the whole wide world is raining down on you Brought to you courtesy of the red, white, and blue
Justice will be served and the battle will rage This big dog will fight when you rattle his cage You'll be sorry that you messed with the US of A Cause we'll put a boot in your ass it's the American way
Uncle Sam put your name at the top of his list And the Statue of Liberty started shaking her fist And the eagle will fly and its gonna be hell When you hear Mother Freedom start ringing her bell And it'll feel like the whole wide world is raining down on you Brought to you courtesy of the red, white, and blue
Most of the soldiers I know (and there are a few) much prefer John Michael Montgomery's "Letters From Home"
quote:Dear Son, I know I ain't written But sitting here tonight, alone in the kitchen It occurs to me, I might not have said it So I'll say it now: Son, you make me proud.
I hold it up and show my buddies Like we ain't scared and our boots ain't muddy But no one laughs,'cause there ain't nothing funny When a soldier cries And I just wipe me eyes
I fold it up and put it in my shirt Pick up my gun and get back to work And it keeps me driving me on... Waiting on letters from home
Speaking as a songwriter I've not seen a more perfect marriage of music and message in a long time.
Speaking as former military, it captures the feelings, well, perfectly.
