When this unbearably long school year ends, I will be employable. YAY!! [Big Grin] Right now I'm living in Portland, OR and I'll be poking around this area for a job, but I'm also looking at other places.

In March, I'll be attending a large teacher job fair at the UofU and a bunch of states will be there, some of them even interviewing on the spot. [Eek!] Mostly just screening interviews and spreading my resume around, but it will be a good networking thing for me.

So, I'm looking at the current list of school districts that will be there and which ones have music openings and I wanted to ask you what you knew about some of these areas and/or school districts.

Mesa Unified School District, Mesa Arizona
Roosevelt School district, Phoenix Arizona

Kern High School District, Bakersfield CA

Hagerman School District, Hagerman Idaho (where in the heck is that?)

Adademica West, Layton UT
Alpine School District, American Fork UT
Jordan School District, Sandy UT
Murray school District, Murray UT

I'm familiar with the rest of the places, or totally uninterested in them. Please share what you know!!

Mesa is not the nicest city in AZ.

Phoenix has good and bad, but gets unbearably hot.

Tell me more about Mesa...

And yeah, I don't do well with hot, so I might just pass that one by.

Mesa has a lovely Temple and pageant. That's why I was in Mesa to begin with. However, the part of Mesa that's not immediately surrounding the Temple struck me as run-down, dirty, having a large drug problem, and just not a happy place to live. (No offense to anyone who lives in Mesa in a nice part I didn't see.) It's not far from Scottsdale, which is a very ritzy area for the most part, but it just doesn't seem like the kind of place you want to teach to me.

Mesa, just speaking of weather alone, is usually hot. The average number of days per year that reach over 90 degrees is 185.

Here's a table of averages from 2002.

JANUARY... 68 40 ( 1.42 ) 81 30 87 26
FEBRUARY.. 73 43 ( 1.05 ) 85 33 91 21
MARCH..... 79 47 ( 1.39 ) 93 36 102 30
APRIL..... 87 53 ( 0.53 ) 101 43 107 36
MAY...... 96 61 ( 0.15 ) 107 50 112 44
JUNE..... 105 69 ( 0.06 ) 114 58 119 51

JULY..... 107 76 ( 1.04 ) 115 68 122 62

NOVEMBER.. 77 46 ( 0.80 ) 90 34 95 28
DECEMBER.. 67 39 ( 1.05 ) 78 28 84 23

This is a website on the schools and here is the official site of the city.

Hope that helps. [Smile]

(I'd try to give better information but I've only driven through the area on my way to Glendale.)

Edit: Just an opinion, but most of urban AZ is really ugly. I think Tucson and metropolitan Phoenix are eyesores until you get outside of the city and into some nature.

As ketchupqueen said, it gets hot here. In the summer it can get up to 120 degrees. I was born and raised in Mesa. It's one of those cities that was founded by Latter Day Saints. There's an LDS Temple on Main Street. There's also a cool music store on main street called Milano's.

If you're interested, I can dig up some web sites ad some more information and post the links here or email you.

The winters are mild and it doesn't snow in the Phoenix area, but you can always go to Flagstaff for snow.

Yeah, I'm shooting for a full time high school or jr. high choir position. I'm kind of leaning towards jr. high, but I'm open for anything that comes up.

This is good to know about Mesa. I had friends that lived in Tempe and they loved it, but I suppose Mesa is a little different, huh?

Yeah, it is. Of course it depends on what part of the city you're in. The easternmost part of the city is occupied by a great number of snowbirds and retired people.

Are there any particular schools you're looking at in Mesa? I went to Poston jr high and Mountain View high school.

Apply EVERYWHERE.

Then, when you get offers, decide which one to accept.

Bakersfield, CA . . . um. It's about 2 hours from L.A. I think it tends to be significantly warmer than the more coastal areas (duh). [Blushing] Um, I can't think of much else offhand . . . [Dont Know]

I hear that Bakersfield is extremely....polluted. Like, even MORE polluted than L.A. Is there any truth to this?

I don't know anything specific, but It's inland and in the San Joaquin Valley. You know about inversion layers?

Answer: probably. [Razz] Although the L.A. Basin is FAR less polluted than it was even 10 years ago. Thank goodness! [Smile]
