A while back I told you all about my adventures with AOL. I had originally recieved a free year of AOL with my computer. After that year was up, I called to cancel and they offered me a few more months, and then after that a few more months. They kept doing it for 10 months. Of course I almost never used AOL (I have a cable connection to the net), I just let them give me free months so I could see how long it would last.

Anyway, after they finally canceled, I figured I was done with it. However, they just sent me a post card saying if I came back I would get another 2 months free. Man, how do these nuts make money. I was tempted to take them up on their offer just to see how long it would go this time, but I decided that I didn't have time to worry with it. I just found it amusing that they wanted someone who got darn near 2 years free from them back. You'd think they would learn that I am never going to agree to pay them.

If you keep it up, sooner or later you will forget to cancel.

Just one slip. Forget to call and cancel some month, and boom! $23.95, sucker.

Their "cancellation experts" definitely have a breaking point. You call to cancel, and you have to reject about three offers, including more free months. But say no enough times, and all of a sudden they're like "OK, fine. I'll cancel you. Bye."

It's happened to me several times.

I think AOL and BMG Music use the same strategy. I'm on my third "X free CDs for the price of one" deal. They keep luring me back with more free CDs - so I buy the one, keep the free, and leave.

Rinse and repeat.
