Does anyone know anything about Great Danes? My husband wants one. All I know about them is Scooby Doo.

They are very sweet natured dogs. They eat a lot. They don't live long, their average lifespan is much shorter than other dogs.
They take a lot of care, and no one should get one without thoroughly investigating it and being fully informed on what all it's going to entail to care for an animal that large. (come to think of it, that advice applies for any animal, regardless of size)

Here's an .ram file of The Youth in Asia, a short story by David Sedaris that concerns Great Danes.

Great Danes are a fantastic breed of dog - loyal, gentle, goofy, loving....but they are a difficult breed as well. They eat an immense amount of food, need a lot of special care to keep them in shape (obesity on a large dog like that is a death sentence), and take up a lot of room. They also don't live as long as smaller breeds because of the extra strain on their heart. Here is some more information on them: Great Danes.

Oh, and if you get a female you have to name her something cute and feminine ... like Petunia. Michelle

The best, most intelligent dog I ever owned was a Great Dane called Gretchen. Except for a irrational desire to attack fireworks she was perfect. When she had pups, under the house, she let my younger brother-6 at the time--crawl in and play with them even though they were only 3 days old.
Then again, the stupidest dog I ever met was the dane that same brother owned when he grew up. The dog almost drowned getting a drink of water.

I had a friend who raised them for years...actually my mom's friend...and she loved them. The problem is that they don't usually live very long, and 4 times Theresa went out to find her dog and found his body instead...their hearts just gave out, with no notice.
She gave up raising them as she said it was too hard to see them die so often.

I should mention that you should consider a rescue ... you can do a websearch for Great Dane Rescue and your state and see what pops up. Michelle
