Okay - I thought I could figure this out, or find it through google, but I can't find the answer.

I'm updating my church library's database, and I notice next to the ISBN number for many books, it says "pbk" in paranthesis.

What does the pbk stand for? I see it similar on several sites when searching through Google, but nowhere does it say what it stands for.

I thought perhaps that -- but can't find confirmation. And it ISN'T on some that I know are for sure paperbacks. So I don't know..

Wow…. This is a strange one. Can’t believe they don’t define it here:
http://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/0xx/020.shtm
They define it as phonebook here:
http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery;jsessionid=1hdg0jjcae15x?tname=pbk-acronym&sbid=lc04b

Ha! I found it.
http://www.library.uiuc.edu/techserv/cpac/cpacpolicies/isbn.htm
ISBN section. Gives very detailed information on treating ISBN’s. Only qualify "pbk." if the library has other hard bound copies. If paperback is the only book the library has, don’t use the qualifier.

I love a good look up challenge!

Ah - thank you Jay! So basically, it is saying if I have a hard-bound copy AND a paperback copy of the same book in my library, then I should use "pbk" to designate the paperback one, since they share the ISBN? In that case, I need to really clean up this data, because most of these (in our church library) are the "only" copies, so they don't need the pbk designation in our Access database...

( See - I really thought Belle would answer this, since she is studying library sciences....)

I could have told you that, from years of working at the local library, and screening boks for the local library for years as well.

Too bad I was at work.... [Big Grin]

How do you screen boks?

And must one bok before one can rebok?
