I have been enjoying reading Ralphie’s Thread "Okay, It's Official." At first I got a little offended.
quote:
There are now two dobies of this thread. Both of them clearly proving my point, as neither are remotely funny.
As a generator of a dobie (which I sincerely thought was funny), I thought Ralphie’s (her?) statement was such a grand sweeping, slightly anal, probably justified response. Hat's off to that sentiment. [Hat] <--ooo, I finally got to use that emoticon!

Further on I read:
quote:
Hatrack as a forum helps us redefine our concepts through conversation. While sometimes those conversations are heated because we form emotional attachments to our opinions, often times it's through those debates we realize - at the time or in retrospect - where we could have been more yielding, and where we were flat-out wrong. It also helps us solidify what we really believe, and test the metal of our own dogma.

I like to think I've come away with a far broader look at most things outside my sphere than I did coming in. But I don't get offended at broad, sweeping generalizations when they are directed at me. I always hope that, with a soft touch in those situations, I can guide others with their definitions like I've been guided.

She hit the nail on the head. Yes Yes Yes....and so I offer two hats... [Hat] [Hat] <--and they are grey! [Wink]

But alas, all is not roses.
quote:
I just wish there wasn't so much spam so I could find those conversations easier.
You see, Hatrack is full of serious people discussing serious things. There are plenty of laid back people and a lot of sci fi and games discussed, but alot of our dialog revolves around religion, war, politics, torture, death penalty, abortion, et cetera.

Once in a while we get a string of dobies. I am fine with that. Individual and collective moods fluctuate. If a day or even a week goes by with a string of dobies, I will not care. I love hatrack because it is a place to talk, discuss, vent, make an arse of yourself, and have fun.

I am not too bothered when Hatrack is so serious that that I am left physically weak or so whimsical I roll my eyes. Human behavior is not constant.

Plus, I have faith that after we have our cathartic moments, we will continue the process of improving ourselves.

I think it's great that there can be both silliness and seriousness going on at once (and usually at least one get-together being planned!)

If you don't like one, you can ignore it, and go only for the other.

That is why I am completely addicted to Hatrack.

lem - I appreciate your sentiments.

I've been on Hatrack now for over four years. I remember the first dobie. I'm very familiar with the ebb and flow of the board. And I of all people would be extremely hypocritical to resent silliness or humor in with Hatrack 'meat', so to speak.

The truth is, since I've been back from my hiatus it seems like there have been a constant onslaught of dobies, and I'm starting to lose my own faith that it will right itself out. Ultimately, this just may not be home anymore. Which would be okay, too. [Smile]

Perhaps the problem is that it seems that dobies are far more numerous other, more interesting ways to be silly and funny. They are too easy.

Speaking of meat, my wife works at an old folks home in the kitchen, and she brings home left-overs every day. The home is really posh and they make fresh food each day--and they always make too much food.

Las night she brought home about 15 boneless chicken breasts cooked in a sweet and sour sauce, about 15 steaks, a big container of jumbalaya pork, and 2 plates of fried chicken. It was our best night yet for free food!

I think part of the cycle of overdobification is to have someone come out and say, "Stop this nonsense!"
Things usually settle down for a while after that, until the next wave.
Maybe we could make an auto-response thread when dobies get out of control.
I really like dobies, and I even chuckle when they get out of hand, but I am glad when the bubble of silliness pops, and things settle back down.
I am on another list, where off topic discussion is discouraged, but happens anyway. Eventually, someone comes out and does a mass spanking, the silly posters get offended and profess how they should be able to post anthing they darn well please, and then things settle down.
