Why haven't we had a thread on this? And if we have, how come I missed it? And if this is really really old and everyone's heard it a thousand times before, please point this out to me and spare my embarrassment.
Anyway, yes. This doesn't really bother me. It just makes me happy.

Indeed I have not. My mother loves them, though, and I may ultimately read them... it's just that I have such a long queue of books on my "to read" list that even if I append Harry Potter to the end, it could be a year before I get to it. Anyway, when she finishes the series I'll probably put it on the list.
As to the Hon. P. Pettigrew, I confess that I watch Politics with Don Newmann often enough to be at least somewhat aware of these things. *shifty eyes*

Er, I *have* seen a couple of the HP movies, through no fault of my own. But I don't plan to see any more of them.

Twinky if you judge the books by the movies then you are making a Big Mistake. The only movie which even caught a glint of what the books are about was the third.
But I digress.
Yes. Read the books. All of them. No excuses.
Then get back to me.

I'm not judging the books. I'm just not in a big hurry.
I didn't read The Chronicles of Narnia until after C. S. Lewis was dead, and I figure I'll still be alive when J. K. Rowling dies, so I'll read them during the Harry Potter revival that is sure to follow her demise. (Okay, okay, now I'm just yanking your chain. But I'll add the first book to my list of books to read based on the strength of your recommendation.)

You know, at least the books you like are popular. When I evangelize my favourite books hardly anyone else has ever heard of them (I exaggerate somewhat, but it's mostly true).

I do like lots of books that aren't mainstream (not many, but a few), but I also like Harry Potter, which I might point out, I have been reading since right after they become so popular in England (1997?), aged 11.
I just feel that because they have become so popular they have become something that nobody with intelligence wants to read because if they're popular they can't be all that good. This is not the case. They are actually good, they just caught the right moment in time and the right place in critic's and children's hearts.

I didn't say not mainstream, just not massively popular.
I remember reading that in your landmark, now that I think of it.
I always figured that the Harry Potter books would be like the Chronicles of Narnia, which is to say quite enjoyable. Anyway, I'll put the first book on my list and if I like it I'll read more. It'll be a while before I get to it but it's not like they'll vanish off the face of the earth...
