There must be something to do in this town that won't offend my taste. That knocks out Momma Mia.
I'm staying at the Mandalay Bay resort for Photoshop World, and while I am very excited about the conference, I think I'm bored. The beach/pool closes at 5:00, and I've exhausted the fascination of SharkVision - the channel showing the live camera in the shark reef. I don't have a car, so the strip is what's open to me. I'll definitely go to the Nile show at the IMAX at the Luxor, but besides that, what else is there to do?

Fine art display at the Belagio (like, Picassos and other known names).
Crepes at the Paris mini-Eiffel, overlooking the water display coordinated with music.
Free glimpse of the white Tigers at the Mirage.
Whichever strip hotel has a pirate theme has re-enactments of the pirate ship taking over a trading village. Also free, occurs every few hours or so. Cute, not too bloodthirsty. Very wenchy.
For those with a more free wallet, try the Cirque d'Soleil show.
I didn't pay for the more extensive show, as I didn't want to support the exhibit, but as we were being put up at the Mirage for a conference, I did stp by to see them briefly.
They are so gorgeous.

Well, Scott R, for all you know I might just be a very good female impersonator. I did have a full beard at the first WenchCon, you know, and that whole "costume" line seemed just a little too convenient, don't you think?

I saw the Blue Man Group when I was in Boston a few years ago (on September 10, 2001, actually), but I love the idea of the crepes and water show. I think I could do one Cirque de Soleil - Zumanity's the sexy one, right? I don't think I'd be comfortable there, but there are a few here - I'll have to look around.

Like Ic and CT, I'd recommend Cirque du Soleil (you'll want to stay away from their show called Zumanity -- that will offend your sensibilities -- but otherwise you should be ok). You'll likely have trouble getting tickets on such short notice, though.
[edit: yall are too quick for me, dammit. I haven't been to Vegas myself, but I've heard O and Mystère are both very good.]

Oh, word to the wise -- we walked the strip to get places at night, and I did feel perfectly safe. Lots of other tourists all around. On the other hand, there were many people standing on the sidewalk handing out sexually explicit cards (stripper and call girl services, complete with pictures). They were also littering the sidewalk.
Of course, that was in summer, but I'd be prepared for the worst -- just so's you know.

Too bad that you're limited to the Strip. Oh, well.
Circus Circus is good if free is your thing. You can just sit and watch the acts on the second floor, and roam the midway. Okay, it will only keep you amused for so long, but free is free. Of course, Circus Circus is at the far northern end of the Strip, so it still might be too far.
I like wandering around inside some of the flashier casinos and just watching the crowds while I take in the interesting architecture. I remember enjoying doing this in the Bellagio as well as New York, New York.
Don't do the Treasure Island (now T.I.) pirate show. It has changed, and shocks some visitors who have heard about the old show. Something to do with pirate babes in highly impractical pirate gear.
After dark, the Bellagio fountain show is amazing, as long as seeing all that water go to waste in a desert during a drought doesn't make you sick to your stomach.
The Venetian has an art museum, but it's not free, nor is the one in the Bellagio. Mandalay Bay's Shark Reef is supposed to be real cool, but I haven't been there.
Really, it's too bad you're confined to the Strip. For a non-Hedonist non-smoker, there's just not much to do or many comfortable places to do it.

I have heard that the water in the fountain at the Bellagio is all recycled waste water, so it wasn't useful for other purposes anyway.

The story we Las Vegans are generally told when we ask why the big casinos get to spray water around indiscriminately while our lawns die and our cars all turn a uniform gray-brown is that they have their own wells, so they don't get their water from the local utility, and therefore all is well. Whatever.

Monday night, I walked from Mandalay Bay to...Bally's, I think. Past the Bellagio, and through New York, New York and the Paris casinos. I fully intended to go to O, and marched up to the ticket counter at the Bellagio to order a ticket, but the lowest price ticket was a $150. It doesn't matter if I could afford it or not, there's no way. So, instead went outside and watched two of the fountain shows for free. Very nice. I also saw the glass art in the lobby of the Bellagio - the same artist did an installation at the Dallas Museum of Art. It was like meeting an old friend.
The Paris has my favorite casino floor - very light and airy and somehow less seedy than all the others.
I planned on seeing the IMAX movie at the Luxor, but by the time I got back to that end of the strip (after beeing hit on twice and solicited once - I was wearing sneakers, jeans, a t-shirt, glasses, no makeup, and my hair in braids. Hello, people! A woman walking alone does not equal available! We are not in the antebellum South!), I was exhausted and had blisters on my feet, so I went up to my room and watched Sex and the City on TBS. No swearing, no sex, no Samantha. Cheers to Vegas.
Last night, I was sore everywhere and my blisters were festering (sorry - it's just such a great word. I had to use it.), so I stayed in and watched the new Gilmore Girls. Yay! my favorite show. I don't have a television at home, so I have to admit that the hotel TV has held some fascination. Did you know that Tony Danza has a daytime talk show? Who knew that?? It was really awful, too. Also, Law and Order is on 24 hours a day.
Tonight, I feel better and am geting restless, so I'm trying to decide between the Ka! show at the MGM, and the IMAX movie at the Luxor. IMAX will definitely be fun, but I'll probably never be in such a good position to see a Cirque de Soleil again. Hmm....
Mrs. M, I have indeed noticed the fabulous shopping. Mandalay Bay is boring in some aspects(the pool closes at five!), but Mandalay Place has some great boutiques.

Well, if it's shopping that interests you, the best shopping is supposed to be in three places on the Strip: 1) the Forum Shops at Caesar's Palace; 2) Desert Passage at The Aladdin; and 3) the Fashion Show Mall, next to T.I.

Eat at the Rum Jungle (the brazillian meat-fest - don't order the lobster). Stick around while it converts from restaurant to night-club. Crappy dance club, but the girls (not offensive) swinging about the room over the crowds on hoops and what not is pretty impressive.
vegas: if you don't want to gamble, indulge, or be offended, leave. Preferably on a helicopter trip to the grand canyon.

Went to see Ka, but it was their night off. Did go down to the Venetian, where I ran into someone from the office - she was here for a different conference there. That was just crazy - I don't know what the chances are. I rode the monorail, and when I was contemplating buying a ticket, a very nice lady came and gave me a pass for the night on the monorail for free. Apparently I looked like her daughter.

Just a lot of pot smoking and rabble-rousing behind-the-scenes. (Not moi, of course. I only rouse. I'd NEVER rabble.) Plus, the show was only so-so considering the price I knew I would be paying for the seats were I not a carnie.

It didn't seem to me that Alluvion was telling you that to be rude...I think he was saying that Vegas is full of that stuff, so the Grand Canyon would be a better choice.
I know someone who did the helicopter over it and completely loved it.
I have always wanted to do the indoor skydiving, ever since I saw it on TV as a kid. It seems like it would be really, really cool...

Ah - that makes more sense. I thought it was a "take a long walk off a short pier" comment, and that seemed a little excessive.
I'd love to take the helicopter ride, but I have work during the day, so I'm limited to what I can find at night.
I go home tomorrow, though, not having seen any Cirque show. I'll have to see it in Dallas when it comes.
