I am debating a trip to Brazil this summer; it seems like a fantabulously lovely place. However, I am not quite sure of accomodations and itiniery.

For those who live there:
What is Brazil like? Is it a violent country? Would I be safe? Would you recommend visiting?

Never been. Eduardo_Sauron might be the only Brazil resident who posts here, but many have gone there to serve on their LDS mission -- you might get ideas from some of them (OSC, jacare, docmagik, others I'm having a tough time remembering, etc.). It also may depend on where in Brazil you're going -- it is a rather large place.

If you have the opportunity, I say go.

If you post what you are looking for in a trip I will be able to make some suggestions as to areas you might want to see etc.

There are a few vaccinations that you might like to get before going. The CDC has a complete list here:

Just don't let the website scare you- Brazil is not all that different climate-wise from some parts of the US. The north half of the country is like Florida and the south is similar to Maryland.

As far as "is it safe", there are some dangerous areas, especially in the big cities. Essentially Sao Paulo and Rio are the same as New York or LA with a few more dangerous areas than those cities.
As I assume you don't speak Portuguese it is probably best to stick to some of the areas that cater to tourists. Rio is a popular destination and an amazing city with beaches, nice hotels, lots of tourist attractions etc.

In order to go you need a Brazilian Visa. here
are instructions on how to apply. You need to send your info to the consulate responsible for your state (a little web surfing will tell you which consulate this is). If you go to anywhere with major cities you can take just a bit of cash and use your credit card for all major purchases. Most big credit card companies automatically do the currency conversion etc. (check with your credit card company).

Manaus is also a popular place for tourists, as it has 'free port' status and is on the Amazon. I really enjoyed my visit there, but I stayed in a very nice hotel that catered to foreigners. I think it was booked that way because of questions food safety or something. I don't remember.

Recife is the only other Brazillian city I have ever visited. It's on the coast, and had nice places. I stayed at the Presbyterian Seminary, though, and had plenty of Seminarians volunteering to take me places and translate for me.

So I guess I am exactly no help. [Frown] Sorry.
