I keep hearing this call off in the woods during the day and into the evening, but I have no clue what type of bird it is. It sounds like:

ooo...what? (pause) woo...woo...woo

The question mark indicates that the second syllable is "up" - like how your voice goes up at the end of a question. (think bob..white?) The call is deeper pitched than most bird calls and sounds "hollow" if that makes any sense.

An owl? We had an owl that sounded kind of like that behind our neighbor's house growing up. I don't know, otherwise.

I wondered about an owl, also, kq. I was under the impression that owls hoot at night, though. Maybe I'm wrong.

Not a mourning dove, farmgirl. We have some of those, and this call is different and much lower pitched.

Sounds like a mourning dove. Try the link here for a wav file.

I'll be darned...it is a mourning dove. The only time I've heard them is when they get frightened and fly away from under our feeders - they make a completely different noise, then. Thanks everyone for solving my bird mystery. [Smile]

This thread reminds me of a song we used to sing.

*sings*

"Hi," said the little leather-winged bat,
"I'll tell you the reason that,
The reason that I fly in the night,
It's 'cause I've lost my heart's delight."

Howdy-dowdy diddle-o day,
Howdy-dowdy diddle-o day,
Ho-owdy-dowdy diddle-o day,
Tull-o-leel a-diddly-doh.

"Hi," said the woodpecker settin' on a fence,
"Once I courted a handsome wench,
She got saucy and from me fled,
E'er since then, my head's been red."

Howdy-dowdy diddle-o day,
Howdy-dowdy diddle-o day,
Ho-owdy-dowdy diddle-o day,
Tull-o-leel a-diddly-doh.

"Hi," said the bluebird as she flew,
"If I were a young man, I'd have two,
If one got saucy and wanted to go,
I'd have a new string for my bow."

Howdy-dowdy diddle-o day,
Howdy-dowdy diddle-o day,
Ho-owdy-dowdy diddle-o day,
Tull-o-leel a-diddly-doh.

"Hoot," said the owl with her head so white,
"A lonesome day and a lonesome night.
Thought I heard some pretty gal say
She'd court all night and sleep all day."

Howdy-dowdy diddle-o day,
Howdy-dowdy diddle-o day,
Ho-owdy-dowdy diddle-o day,
Tull-o-leel a-diddly-doh.

"No, oh, no," said the turtle dove,
"That's no way for to win your love!
If you want to gain your heart's delight,
Keep her awake both day and night."

Howdy-dowdy diddle-o day,
Howdy-dowdy diddle-o day,
Ho-owdy-dowdy diddle-o day,
Tull-o-leel a-diddly-doh.
