It is time. My GAT espresso maker, which I make my coffe with, is not working. My regular drip coffee maker is clogged with limey residue, and after I cleaned it with vinegar, it leaves a vinegar-y taste.

These are my coffee needs:

Hot.
This is why I love the GAT, but it only makes one cup at a time. It is Dunkin-Donuts, burn-thy-lip hot, though, and that is what I love.

Strong but not bitter.
It is hard to make a pot of strong coffee with my drip maker, without it tasting like sludge.

So, those are my needs. Any suggestions? I have thought of one of those plunger-styles, perhaps? I am willing to spend about thirty dollars, maybe a little more if you can convince me.

My dad swears by the kind where you brew it, like, quadruple strong in cold water, then add hot water to make regular coffee as needed. He keeps this "coffee syrup" in his fridge at all times, and it takes him as long as it takes to boil water to make a cup later. He also says it's smoother, richer without being stronger (although he likes it strong and black).

Wow, I have never heard of that method! By cold, you mean he just mixes cold water and ground coffee and lets it sort of steep?

It's a special kind of brewer thing. Yeah, it's cold water, and you pour it over the coffee in the machine thingy, and then you stick it in the fridge to steep for, like, 24 hours.

Of course, you get your coffee ground special for it.

According to my dad, the best coffee you can buy at a reasonable price. When I drank tea, that's what I usually drank. They also have excellent cocoa.

I recently got one of these for next to nothing on Woot, and am incredibly impressed with it. Honestly, I've never brewed a cup of coffee that comes close to being as good as the coffee this thing produces. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Well, it seems like it to me, and you can adjust the temperature of the heating element that the pot itself sits on, so that's good.

I doubt I will ever be happy with the heat of a drip coffee maker unless I get one of those restaurant ones. Or my little GAT. But I still need a big pot maker, so I might try that one.

What about the plunger kind, where you put the coffee in, pour boiling water in, steep, and plunge? That is sort of the method KQ's dad uses in a way.

It is kind of the same thing. Maybe he even uses the same machine-thingy-- I think it does have a plunger-- he just uses cold water.

I don't drink coffee...but those in my family who do, swear by Bunn coffee makers

I used to use one of the plunger types. It's true that you can make a cup of coffee that's pretty close to 212 with one of those, and I like the flavor coffee made with them has. Unfortunately, they leave in an oil that is pretty bad for the heart that is filtered out by percolating coffee makers.
