Anybody ever grown any galangal? I've got several chunks of galangal root soaking in water at the moment, and if they send out little rootlets I'll be transferring it into dirt and trying to grow it. At what point are the roots developed enough to support the plant when it's transferred into the soil? I'm soaking some lemongrass stalks as well, intending to plant them once their roots are well developed enough. I'm not sure when to stick them in a pot either, or how big a pot they'll need. I've got a dozen or so stalks that are all displaying the beginnings of roots, and was thinking of potting them in groups of six. Not sure how far apart they need to be, but I'll be experimenting.

If you're curious, I've got a kaffir lime plant that's doing nicely, and will be trying to grow kii noo chilis from seed. We'll see what kind of luck I have. I'm growing all of these things in pots so that I can take them back inside this fall.

No idea, but I have seen galangal in quite a few recipes.

No idea about galangal but I'm growing lemongrass at the moment.

Mine is in a fairly large pot, in a clump all together. It needs lots of sunlight and will live all year round - and will grow to fill the pot. So I would plant it in a pot by itself.

I have the abovementioned lemongrass, chillies, coriander and a kaffir lime tree. I am going to plant garlic and around my rose bushes. Hadn't thought of galangal but that's a good idea. I am looking forward to the day where I make my own curry paste entirely out of home grown ingrediants.

Be careful with the lemongrass. It WILL take over your yard if it escapes the confines of a pot. Unfortunately, not everyone in my family appreciates lemongrass as much as I do.

Haven't grown galangal, but I suspect you would treat it pretty much the same as ginger, which means it should be fairly easy to cultivate from cuttings off the root.

Good luck with the garden.

Thanks Lisa! I've never grown ginger either--is soaking it in water to get the rootlets going necessary, or can I just stick it straight in the dirt?

Imogen, yeah, I have the goal of eventually doing that myself. My problem is that I don't have any yard to speak of, so any gardening I do has to be in pots. Still, I'll get there. Want to exchange curry paste recipes? I've got a couple that aren't bad.

I'm no horticulturist, so someone please correct me if I'm full of whatever I should be fertilizing the garden with.

I've started ginger and sweet potato just by taking a hunk off the end and setting it in a shallow glass pie plate, which has been filled to about 1/4 inch. I'm thinking if you just bought a small piece of galangal or ginger and cut open one of the protuberances, it would begin to throw out roots within a couple of days.

We kept sweet potatoes growing in the house all winter, just to see some pretty greenery that took virtually no care. We weren't going for sustainable agriculture on that one, though.

G'night all.
