If UNC wins this game, there are people who will seriously consider driving to St. Louis, or all the way to North Carolina and killing Roy Williams.

Seriously.

And I'm afraid at least one of them is in my house right now. I have been dreading tonight for two years. [Frown]

This is why it's always been my philosophy not to get attached to anything or care about anything too much. If you hope, your hopes can be crushed. Granted, I've heard that the hoping thing occasionally works out, but I've never seen it. I just figure if you expect the worst, you can be pleasantly surprised, but never devastated.

It's not like I've never experienced that whole elation thing, I have just discovered that the payoff isn't worth the other end of the spectrum when it doesn't work out. The highs aren't worth the lows. At least, not in my opinion.

And it really bothers me that my husband's week, (month, season?) could be ruined by a stupid basketball game or football game.

I hate being around people whose emotions are on a roller coaster, like during a sporting event. I don't care if they are screaming at the TV because they are happy. Don't you know that love turns into hate in a heartbeat? They are cheering right now, but they could be screaming at you the next second. Calm down!

I hate people with inconsistent emotions. I'm much too unstable to be able to deal with it. Steady is what I like. It might be boring, but it's consistent.

I'm the proverbial cat in a room full of rocking chairs. If everyone would just sit still, things would be fine. But there's always a couple of agitators out there, just trying to get everyone all riled up.

Man, I hope for Roy's sake he loses tonight. He coached here for 15 years. You'd think he'd know better than to go to UNC and win the National Championship. People here take basketball seriously. You know, like people in Texas take high school football. Only more so.

I mean, this is the home of basketball. James Naismith spent his last 41 years here. What the hell is he thinking?

[Angst] Okay, okay, you caught me. I'm an agitator, a sore loser, a screamer! *cry* I'll leave this game alone, though.

Dude, it is only a game. Sure, it is fun, but there is no reason to upturn cars, pee in wear places and get revoltingly drunk, take off your shirt and hang upsidedown from a pole in 30 below zero weather and then get dared to stick something to a pole that will stick to a pole and get frostbitten.

But, that does suck...

Those fans from Illannoy really irritate me. This game is a lose/lose proposition for Kansas fans. Hard feelings will be generated either way. Having listened to fans from Illannoy gloat that their new coach knows how to coach better than their old coach, I'm almost apt to pull for Roy.

How do you think I feel being at a school in Lexington, Ky right down the road from good old University of Kentucky and not knowing (or caring) anything about basketball.

I have learned to not admit that I am ignorant of the sport and to pretend I am watching the game when they (the UK Wildcats) play (well, when they were playing) for fear of being taken out back and shot or excommunicated.

When they lost, you would have thought the end of the world had come, everyone was so depressed. In the frshman English class that I observe, the students know more about UK basketball than they do about ANYTHING they are supposed to know for class. And they will admit it! I am so lost here.

Save me!

Tell me about it. On top of that Illinois is my parent's alma mater. It doesn't really matter who wins. Either way is a disaster here.

Go Tarheels! But don't score more than 90 points, or I lose the tiebreaker to Farmgirl. [Razz]

Yeah - you probably got this one, Frisco - at current score rate.

I want North Carolina to win, Kayla -- because I feel Roy has always deserved to win the big one, and our Kansas players consistently let him down when they were so close. So let him have it once with his homestate team.

No, you don't understand.

See, they lived through being abandoned by Larry Brown, who swore he wouldn't leave.

They lived through Roy not leaving the first time he was offered the job.

They thought they were safe.

Then Roy left and they were devastated. Then the rumors started about how it had all been worked out when he was originally offered the job. How his kid and wife wanted a couple more years at Kansas. How he thought his best shot at the National Championship was with his Sophomore class. How Matt Dougherty was the patsy in the whole thing.

They'd rather Roy were dead. They've been betrayed.

15 years here and Roy couldn't win. Two there and he wins. It's not pretty. This was supposed to be their celebration. Roy was their coach.

They forgot. There is no loyalty. There is only greed. Whether it be cash, power, or in this case, location.

Some of us never forget that. We've learned that the hard way. Of course, they tell us that we are wrong. That we shouldn't think that way. But on nights like tonight, we know, in the long run, we are right.

Which brings up an interesting point. How do you live your life? There are two schools of thought. Those who are bitter and frightened, (um, think me) and those who embrace live even more. (Think Roberto Benigni in Life is Beautiful [Wink]

I wonder if there will be a test you do someday to find out what you would be like. I mean, lots of things are inherited, right? Could disposition be one of them? I'm very much like my grandmother. She lived through a lot, and she did it with style for a long time. But the older she got, the less she wanted to go out. The less she wanted to know. Personally, I'm of the opinion that she died when she did because she just couldn't live through seeing her daughter die. (My aunt died a short time after my grandmother did. We knew she was dying. It was my grandmother's death that was more surprising.)

I remember one time talking to her about something and having her respond how she was happy I was happy, but her "brain was full" and she just didn't want to hear the details. At the time, I found it amusing. Now I know what she was talking about.

I'm full.

I know what you're trying to say, but isn't hoping other people won't run away with their emotions just as foolish?

This is serious. I hear stories concerning sports and domestic abuse. My advice isn't very good, and I'm four states away so I can't offer a whole lot of physical help, but I get worried when people are scared in their own home, and for cause.

For the sake of your peace and the kid, I hope everything works out, and either way, I hope you can talk to him about this after the game.

And hey, I don't care about basketball, I'm rooting for you. [The Wave]
