Hi, I've been mostly a lurker for a long time.
Worthing Saga is my favorite OSC book, I love sweeping universes where the imagination can roam.
Which is why I love Battlestar Galactica.
So my friend and I came up with a theory about the potential identity of the Cylons.
The lords of kobol, are referenced throughout the series with heavy influence given by the Greek gods. Since the cylons seem to consider themselves to be the gods, we posed the question which god might each cylon represent?
There are twelve models. There are twelve Olympian gods. Here is our potential list so far:
There are also other potentials, the Hermes model was first encountered on the Ragnar station then found later for Starbuck to interrogate. During the interrogation is when The President is told that Adama is a Cylon. If one Adama or the other is A Cylon then Apollo's identity is given while another Cylon earlier referenced the Admiral as Zeus.
Any thoughts, criticisms or heretical denunciations?

The other models don't seem to fit in either. (The droids shall we call them?) They did in the old series use names of greek goddesses and gods, but they were for the people (humans). I wouldn't exclude it from happening, but I find it quite unlikely that it would be a big deal. It doesn't fit with the cylons.
Btw, has the season finished here in the US?

Hera is the essence of fidelity to the husband. It's closer to 6 than the XO's wife. The smirky tour guide/suicide bomber smacks of Hermes. The guy Starbuck interrogated was freaky, I almost want to call him Dionysius.

They Cylons sort of told a lot of their beliefs in a single God in the show where Baltar was arrested. They keeping flashing that thing about “They have a plan” and I’m assuming we’ll learn a bit more about that plan tonight.

There was something conflicted and tortured concerning him, but also powerful. At first, I thought he was Zeus, except he didn't radiate that sort of sure masculinity. He was too unkempt to be Apollo, too powerful to be Hephaestus, yet too shrewd to be Ares. Maybe Zeus is a better candidate.
At first, I thought that Boomer would be a candidate for Dionysius. Of all of them, she seems to be the one who attains the qualities of man, and feels a distinctly Dionysian loneliness in not being neither man nor god. Boomer struck me as a little bit of Artemis, too, the picture of feminine beauty, Goddess of the Hunt, and protector of Children, but it's unfathomable to think of Artemis having sex, and absurd to believe that she would have sex with a mortal.

This is one of those questions for which only the writers know the answer, but it would be the first question I would ask them. For all I know, I'm projecting.

I'm going to disagree with wikipedia. There is nothing peaceful about dionysius. If you want serenity, clarity, surety, law, or peace, you want Apollo, Dionysius taps into that primordial contradiction and excess that always threatens to destroy the law and individuation.

Don't forget that this Battlestar Galactica is based on the original Battlestar Galactica which was created by a Mormon and supposedly heavily influenced by Mormon beliefs. Not being a Mormon, and not having any knowledge of Mormon beliefs I can't compare and contrast, but I understand that a number of members of this forum are Mormons. Perhaps some of them might have some insight as to how elements of Battlestar Galactica might map to Mormon beliefs, or if they do at all.

I think that the Cylons made twelve models because of the 12 Colonies, Council of the 12, number of gods...
I still assume that the Cylon god is actually Satan and the Lords of Kobol are those Vorlon-like beings of light (angels).

I was half thinking a neat twist would be that the Cylons turn out to be like the Jewish race who worship one true God, while the humans are the Canaanites who the Cylons have been told to wipe out. Just like the Jews, the Cylons are going to let some live and maybe populate the promised land of Earth with their “human” babies. Or something silly like that.

Maybe a little off topic, but who else thought that the episode "Colonial Day" was a little misplaced in the importance it gave to things? Isn't the re-creation of the Legislative Brance/Quorum of the Twelve MUCH more important than who is VP? And having the episode about Baltar being elected as a Councilor would stay true with the original series... since that Baltar was a member of the Quorum when he betrayed the Colonies.
I guess the creators figured most people forget the power of the legislature...more dramatic to have Baltar as part of the Executive.

I don't know if I've ever been so completely surprised by the direction a show took, in so many ways. Holy crap that was *amazing*!

In case there are people intending to watch the later broadcast I don't want to spoil anything, so I won't. But I have to say that that is the first time my jaw has literally dropped in response to a TV show.
Seriously, it dropped! I started laughing at the fact it had done so.

Oh man, that scene was like something out of 24. I just screamed the F-word and fell out of my seat.

Is George R. R. Martin the head writer for this series*?
*no, I'm not serious. I know he isn't. But this whole episode felt like his work somehow, even before the end.

I yelled. I almost woke up one of the kids.
I was...stunned.
I suppose I shouldn't be. I now see I should have seen it coming. But I didn't and I was truly wowed.

I loved it, epecially the cat fight of jealousy. 6 was angry.
I'm usually pretty good at predicting, my friends are always telling me to shut up and watch, however the end definantly came out of left field, definantly R.R. Martin esque.

Man talk about cliff hangers. Ok, guess time for the spoiler warning….
Spoiler………..
Ok…. So… Adama of course isn’t going to die. Starbuck and Helo will bring back pregnant Boomer in the little Cylon ship and I guess lock her up with the other Boomer? Also, the arrow doesn’t look like anything special. Wonder if it’s like a key. What on Earth is Baltar doing? Is #6 pregnant or is she talking about Boomers baby? The President in jail is cool. She isn’t like the US president who is Commander-in-chief and her interference couldn’t be tolerated. Should be neat to see how they sort it all out. Also, why do they Cylons allow the base ship to be blown up? Seems like a waste and almost suicide like. It’s almost like they’re steering the humans to where they want them to go and do.

This is in answer to an earlier question about the Mormon influences. The more I watch, the less influenced the new series seems from the older version. There are very few Mormon elements left in the show. Even those parts that would reflect LDS ideas the most are so twisted and redefined as to be a whole new thing.
I think part of this is because Mormonism is far more influenced by Egyptian iconography and mythology than Greek and Roman. I would say that Stargate is far more "Mormon" than the new Battlestar Galactica has become.

I think the cylons/greek gods theroy is mostly right. Look at the names of the colonies. They all have names that are constellations, just changed a little bit. Gemenon-Gemini, Sagatterion(might be wrong spelling, but something like that)- Sagaterius, Picon-Picies, etc. Just my opinion.
