Alright, so I'm a geek, a sci-fi geek (like being here I'd be anything else), but I'm very very picky about the television and movies I watch. Random thought: The only movie that ever scared me was Event Horizon. It also made me very angry because I was expecting something slightly less damaging and far more interesting.

I digress.

I was going to ask this: Is the new BattleStar Galactica any good? I'm a big fan of shows like (sniff) Firefly (best sci-fi series on television ever, seriously), ST:TNG, Farscape, the first season of Sliders, and even to a degree Babylon 5, though it never really held my attention it showed potential. Crap I do not like includes shows like any Star Trek after DS9, Andromeda, or any television that is mostly driven by the presence of female characters whose leather outfits seem to be non-functional for their intended purpose but probably could have been used as corsets among the Victorians.

So based on all that, will I think the show sucks?

I don't know anything about Battlestar Galactica, but based on the list of shows you like (and my own personal preferences), I would highly reccomend Stargate SG1.

I tried to watch that show, but it just doesn't hold me. I think it fails to entertain me for the same reason I hated 90% of the episodes of Enterprise. They had a good thing going "okay, we're exploring the known universe through these networks of stargates and finding new interesting cultures and species and learning how to interact with them and work with them as friends" which suddenly became "we need ratings so instead EARTH IS IN DANGER BY EVIL ALIEN OVERLORDS OMG WE HAVE A WAR."

I could be wrong about my assessment of that, but half the episodes I watched were variations on "lets save this planet from the gould." I'd like to see more of "these people don't speak any Earth language, have advanced technologies, but seem to only accept heroin is currency."

You know. Pick one or the other [Smile]

I love most of the same shows on your list with a strong addiction to Stargate, so yeah, I second the recommendation there.

As for Battlestar Galactica - my husband, also a major sci-fi geek, and I watched the mini series and loathed it to the point that he refuses to ever discuss it or even acknowledge that we actually watched it. The series, I don't know. The experience with the mini series was enough to give us good incentive to never give the series a try.

I think Battlestar Galactica lost me in the incident with the baby.

First post! I think... if not then ignore that statement. Anyway.

I think the new Battlestar Galatica is pretty amazing. To me it has a great sense of realism, maybe not the human robots, but the way the internal problems of the colonies ships works. They have enough problems to keep it interesting, so that the show doesn't constantly bombard the watcher with, "Oh no! The Cylons are attacking us again!" Plus this show is really dark, and it's a nice change of pace in sci-fi TV.

Also, it has some great characters. Addoma is the man. At first I thought making Starbuck a woman was lame, (I still miss Face-Man), but I've gotten over it and I like her. Baltar is always fun to watch. Though I don't care for all the sex they put in the show that basically revolves around him.

The special effects are very well done. From the way it looks, it almost has to be done by the same team who did Firefly (loved almost everything about the series, and can't wait for the movie)

A few of my friends really love the new battlestar. One of them insists that the episode to watch is the first one after the miniseries. Apparently it's different enough and good enough to really fall for the show.

I've only seen the first half of the mini series, and wasn't interested enough to pursue the other half. But when I have some free time I'll watch through the first series episode at least.

So I wathced the first episode (had to download it, curse lack of cable and no friends with VHS), and I must say it thoroughly rocked. I'm not a purist in the sense that I can't deal with a retake on an old classic, but I am a purist in the sense that I'm a huge fan of realism.

I'll watch cheesy sci-fi at the movie theatres, this will do just fine for my home viewing [Smile]

Aww, come on now. Star Trek Voyager had its moments. The Doctor is one of the best characters in Star Trek by far.

It had its shortcomings yes, but you have to at least appreciate the good stuff.

The Doctor and his episodes were some of the better writing in the show. In the same way, Enterprise had its moments. When it really comes down to it though, Rick Berman has more or less singlehandedly ruined the Star Trek franchise with Voyager and Enterprise. This amazes me being as he's responsible for writing some of the best episodes the show ever had, such as Brothers and Unification. Brannon Braga is also responsible for writing some of the all time great episodes (almost all of these were TNG, really), and he was also heavily responsible for Voyager and Enterprise.

Of course neither were responsible for my favorite episode of all time The Inner Light, but we'll forgive them for that.

There is the matter that both were responsible for the Dominion story Arc in DS9. They were both responsible for the Borg Arc in Voyager, and they were both responsible for both the Time Travel Arc and the Expanse Arc from Enterprise.

In other words, they write great short stories but absolutely fail when it comes to writing a compelling long-term story and should NEVER be allowed to do so. They're the reason that I hated Voyager, ended up hating DS9, and was constantly let down by Enterprise. They both seem to fall in the mindset that there are two things that their young male audience needs: War, cheap plot devices, and hot alien women.

This is ironic considering I'm dissing this but praising the new Battlestar Galactica, but Star Trek was a show of integrity at one time. It was about exploration, it was about conquering your own predjiduces, it was where humanity was not inherently evil.

Then Roddenberry died, and Berman decided to go dance on his grave.

I might be being a tad overcritical....

One of my favorite reviews of Galactica had a neat comparison to Trek. Trek was created at a more optimistic time. Mankind would one day overcome all prejudices and humanity would work together for the betterment of all without need of monetary compensation.

Galactica had a whole episode on the breakdown of the economy, currency suddenly becoming worthless, and the need to throw off the old capatilistic ways for socialism. The enemy looks like us, so suspicion is high. It reflects some of the darkness we're feeling these days, but it doesn't glorify it.

Personally, I love it for the soap opera. I'm still rooting for Sharon and the Chief to find a way to get back together. With less than 50,000 humans left, you'd think who military personel dated would become less important.
