Sure, I've got a major case of writer's block that may eventually cause my suicide, but I still love movies.

I share the LOVE!

The Incredibles Rules!

Sideways is very, very funny.
It makes me wish that more movies felt like a personal adventure in filmmaking instead of the standard A+B=C crap.

Spanglish is a writers movie.
If you love good writing, see this film.

Napoleon Dynamite! AWESOME! AWESOME! AWESOME!
Very refreshing.

<T>

I come from the Church of Frank Miller.

If I ever won an Oscar I'd thank Frank Miller first and then Spielberg second, with that in mind, I was kind of cool on Sin City.

It was no where near as cool as the Graphic Novels, and in my opinion should have been animated. The MARV stuff was cool and well done.
But the Nancy bruce stuff didn't grab me, Bruce Willis just can't come off as old, it's like he's prepetually 35 to me, they might have been much better off with Clint Eastwood, and even though I LOVE Jessica Alba and think she is the most beautiful girl on the planet, she didn't do much for me. And then there is all the girls of OLD TOWN, in the comic book it works, but to see all these women dressed up in the silly outfits was a bit too much for me, couldn't take it seriously.

I would like to add a note to ALL the scenes that involved cars driving, they looked SOOO wonderful.

I'd like to take issue with the movie CLOSER. It was OK, I loved seeing that Natalie Portman has one of the cutest butts I've ever seen, but I HATED that it is now advertised as a "love" story for adults.

There wasn't any love in the stupid movie. It's all about cheaters who cheat and are cheaters who cheat. It's cold and calous, and hasn't a shred of romance or responsibility. It's all about adults who act upon their impulses like children who don't know any better. In a country where the divorce rate is 70%, I can't stand the thought of this movie as "romance".

Napaleon Dynamite: Total thumbs up on that. Jamie didn't get it.

The Incredible: Brilliant movie.

Sideways: Myeh, it was a gem in its own right, and I recognize that, but it's not really something I'd put on my favorites list.

Spanglish: This is one that I haven't seen that I keep really wanting to. Thanks for the rec'.

As for closer, I had no desire to see it.

Sin City, I'm really torn on. On one hand, people keep saying its really cool, on the other, I just don't care. So the question : do I care more about what other people say about the movie than my actual desire to see it.

Personally, I thought Spanglish had a pretty big structural flaw. I'm not feeling terribly motivated right now, so I'll just cut and paste from the review I wrote:

quote:
It turns out that the makers of this film chose quite an apt title. The word “Spanglish” refers to the pidgin that native Spanish speakers often use before they become proficient in English. It’s not quite English, but it’s not Spanish either. Similarly, this film couldn’t seem to decide what it was. The overall structure of the movie makes it clear that it’s about cultural identity and heritage, a juxtaposition between Mexican and American life. Yet we only really see this at the very beginning and very end. The entire rest of the film seems to be about relationships and parenting. The problem is that too much of the story is told from Adam Sandler’s character’s point of view, or his wife’s. The characters that should be in focus--the Mexican housekeeper and her daughter--are kept distant by the fact that the housekeeper doesn’t speak English and nothing is ever shown from the daughter’s perspective. So we are left with what we think is a somewhat odd love story--or, rather, two odd love stories in parallel--that remains completely unresolved.

I actually didn't like "Sideways" at all. I haven't yet met a single person who disliked it, besides me, but I really didn't enjoy it. That's the only one, out of the ones you've mentioned, that I've seen.

I actually really want to see "Closer," as well as "The Incredibles," and "Napoleon Dynamite."

Yeah, Sin City takes a lot of belief to suspend to enjoy.

Oddly enough, when I play it back in my mind, it is animated. I mean if I focus on my memories of the movie long enough to remember anything in a photo-realistic way, the movie stops. If I remember actual scenes, the best I can get is a sort of roto-scoped animation effect. Very strange, really. I don't have this problem with any other movies I've seen.

Part of me would like to see it again just for the cinematography, but I have too much reverence for the male crotch to actually sit through the movie again, I think.

From the 60 minutes interview last night, I understand that Sin City IS animated-- everything but the actors and a few props are CGI.

Well, that's true. I was thinking more about the actors themselves, though. The single splashes of color in each scene also play tricks visually. The colored item(s) seem hyper-realistic and make even the real-life elements of the B&W parts of each frame seem less real.

Over all, I liked the style of the film a great deal. It was a tad over the top on the violence, though.

Thor sweetheart, please don't even kid. Committing suicide would be the the best way to ensure that screenplay never gets written.

All the great writers you admire have fought through writers' block too and conquered it - so can you. Hang in there.
