He doesn't post here, or really anywhere, anymore, but I know a lot of you remember Slash the Berzerker. He's co-written a book with Daniel Abraham, and it's coming out this summer. They're using the pen name James S. A. Corey. The book is called Leviathan Wakes, and is the first book of the Expanse Trilogy. They've gotten some really good advance reviews so far, including one from Publisher's Weekly.

Also, I've read it, and it's great. I just realized when I suggested it to tt&t that it hasn't really been talked about on Hatrack yet, and that's a damned shame. It's the exact sort of book this crowd will go for, and the fact that Slash wrote it is just icing on the cake. I highly recommend checking it out. June 15th, y'all.

ETA: Oh yeah, if you don't want to follow the link, it's a space opera/mystery/horror book. Spaceships, detectives, and romance. Fun stuff!

Wow, for some reason I didn't realize that Slash was a writer. I'll definitely check the book out. I wish he still posted at Sake.

How did Slash start working with Abraham?

As I understand it, they were in the same crit group and Abraham really liked his concept and asked if he wanted to write it together. The book is set in the future Slash created for the 2350 pbp game that he ran on sake for awhile. He ran a parallel live game for friends in NM, too. That's what Bok and twinky were referring to in the other thread -- they were players in the original pbp game. Neither of their characters made the book, though.

I have not read any part of this novel, but I did want to say that I have read some of Slash's short fiction and it was phenomenal. He is a great writer, and I am confident this will be worth reading. [Smile]

I'm really looking forward to reading this one when it becomes available.

I just realized that the first book of Ian Tregellis' Milkweed Tryptich has been out for almost a year now. I'm kicking myself for having lost track of it. I've been waiting to read it for three years. I guess this will make the wait for the second book in the series more tolerable.

ElJay, Szymon's spirit lives on, in a small way, in Amos, if you ask me. [Wink]

Oh, and there is a cool e-book promotion going on. Get the ebook of Leviathan Wakes, and you can Daniel Abraham's new fantasy book.

You can find out more about the deal here: http://www.orbitbooks.net/orbit-announces-epic-ebook-promotion/

The funny thing is, as much as I really love Daniel Abraham, IMO the best parts of the book are the ones Slash wrote.

I can say this here, because I'm reasonably confident Slash won't read it: one of the weirdest things about reading the book is that, well....Holden was quite obviously an idealized (and in some ways, artificially flawed) version of one aspect of my personality; when I originally wrote him, I just turned certain traits to 11 and stuck 'em there. But the voice is pretty close to mine, as are many of the opinions.

Slash, in writing him, nailed the voice. So it was extremely weird for me, reading the book, because that inner voice you sometimes get when you're reading a novel or watching a movie, the one that narrates to yourself what you'd do in that situation, was exactly the same as what was happening. It was somewhat eerie. *laugh*

You wouldn't feel comfortable saying that where he'd read it?

I was planning on letting him know I pimped the book here next time we talked, so he very well may read it. Just fyi, if you wanted to edit.

Not me. But then I was also involved with the play test. Got my copy of the book weeks ago.

I'll have to buy a copy, then leave it on the shelf until the series is finished. I've learned never to start an unfinished saga.

The first book is actually self-contained. At least, I found the ending satisfying on its own, to the point where I don't know what the next one will be about, specifically. (No cliffhangers.)

I'll check it out too.

And by "check it out", I mean steal it.

And by "steal it", I mean "set up a ponzi scheme and defraud thousands and thousands of elderly people of their savings."

And by "set up a ponzi scheme and defraud thousands and thousands of elderly people of their savings," I mean "become a mixed martial arts master, move to Mexico, and become head of a drug cartel by defeating the existing head of the cartel in single combat".

And by "become a mixed martial arts master, move to Mexico, and become head of a drug cartel by defeating the existing head of the cartel in single combat," I mean "build a time machine, go back to the 1960 with sheet music for every Beatles song ever written, and become renowned as a songwriter by selling each song a few months before the Beatles did in our time stream."

And by "build a time machine, go back to the 1960 with sheet music for every Beatles song ever written, and become a renowned songwriter by selling each song a few months before the Beatles did in our time stream," I mean "preorder Slash's book on amazon, and get it the day it's published."

I've gotten a copy, and I have still pre-ordered the Kindle version. With the 2-for-1 deal, it just makes sense.

It's about me! (my character from the rpg is featured in the next, though she's a bit different)

Actually, we talked a bit about the changes to Bobby while we were visiting Slash last week. So I knew she was featured. I still don't know what the book's about, though. Except a couple of scenes.

I intentionally didn't read the preview chapter. I generally prefer not to.

I am hoping Sol makes it into the second book. I was really starting to like what he could do in a crowd when the game ended.

I'm soooooo excited for Slash! He's a fantastic writer, and an amazing, er, person. Just don't try to give him a high five. Lizard men have claws, you know.

I actually enjoyed reading Slash's in-game work with Bobbie more than my own stuff-- I liked his version of her voice better.
