Our orchestra teacher wants to make us play today, when we've had a very hard week. Can anyone tell him something convinsing so that he isn't so ruthless with us?

Umm... you could try just playing you know Playing music can be extremely relaxing and fun if you stop thinking of it as work, stop worrying about screwing up, and just have fun
But in the case that you just really don't want to play... It would depend heavily on your teacher.

Probably not on such short notice. You might want to look at this resource. The principles outlined have definitely improved my ability to communicate when the stakes are high.

Tell him that your fingers/chaps ( depending on what instrument you play) are too tired to function correctly. And then demonstrate faking horrible playing.
