Jennifer Leigh, my daughter. Healthy, vibrant, wonderful.

Myself and my sister.

My mother. And her sisters.

Her mother. Danaw. She passed away just over a year ago. I posted about that, about how awful my mother's siblings were about not calling her until after the funeral.

And my great-grandmother. Granny aka Mamom. She's been bedridden following a stroke for many years, unable to communicate well, feed herself, or even control her bodily functions. She passed away day before yesterday. Her funeral was this morning.

I took a trip to see her and Pappy when Daniel was small. It was the only time I'd seen her in person since I was very small myself, but I could feel that she *knew* me, and loved me. She cried when I introduced my son to her. He bears her father's name. She said the one word she could still say. "Guuud!" and she cried.

Pappy played the banjo, and I sang to her. She listened quietly, smiling, with joy shining in her eyes. She loved old hymns.

My father called yesterday to tell me of her death. I could hear my mother sobbing in the background. They left immdeiately, and pulled into the parking lot of the funeral home just as the funeral was starting this morning.

My aunts and uncles refused to speak to my mother. They didn't invite her to the post-funeral gathering, and no one would show her where Danaw was buried. When I spoke to my father an hour ago, Mom was inside the cemetary office studying plot maps, trying to determine where her mother's grave is.

[Cry]

I appreciate your sympathy. I'm sad for my mother. She doesn't deserve to be treated this way, and she loved Granny dearly. [Frown]

You know, Boon, this is so very cynical of me in my aging days, but whenever someone says to me of a friend, "She is like family to me," I cringe.

I want my family to be more like my friends than the other way around.

I think it's beyond awesome that all five were alive at the same time, even if it was only for a little while. You appreciate that, and I hope your daughter is old enough to appreciate it as well. Don't let the badness spoil that.
