Captain Jack is in hot water and the natives are restless about it.

Well, actually, more of a BBQ and most likely a bunch of hot air.

Of course...all this guy is doing is giving free publicity to Disney _and_ creating an illusion of "false edginess" for the film _and_ making it certain that now people will connect real life natives with the fictional cannibals invoked in the pirate myths and legends.

Talk about self-fulfilling prophecies!

What an inventive way to get one's five or more fruits and vegies each day.

Not that I don't get the humor of making up terrible lies about a group of people and then using these lies as a pretext for killing and enslaving them but I have a sneaking suspicion people might not find this so negligible if for example it was showing a humourous scene about Jews trying to steal Christian babies so they could drain them of their blood to make matza.

Note that the people in the film are never alluded to as being caribs, and are in fact called a completely different name, and that the island they are on is fictional.

So this might be more like making up a story about how the Corpinians tried to steal Pondominiumites (a fictional region in medieval Europe's people) babies so they could drain them of their blood to make a flatbread.

Of course, since this is a silly scene, the baby in question would actually have super powers and do all sorts of zany things.

fugu,
You forgot to mention about how the Corpinains were all wearing stars of David, payos, and tallits.

Yeah, this is kind of a silly instance of it, but I see the underlying point as being similar to the underlying point of a lot of the Jewish reaction to The Passion of the Christ. The reason why people have the cultural idea that these people were cannibals is that people made up this lie about them in order to justify doing terrible things to them. Their descendents have a right to be pissed about that. Protesting this movie (which it seems almost like only one guy is doing anyway) is a way for them to say "The version of history you believe in is wrong and pretty darn awful too."

*amused* Squick, if you're going to pluralize it as payos, then you should be consistent and say talis (well, talisim, really). (Or use payot and talit (talitim).)

Except there are many peoples that dressed pretty much like the caribs, so the dress is not distinctive in the same way stars of David are.

Also, note that most of the caribs (the ones in power, at least) don't mind at all, and the ones involved in the film (some number not too much less than 400, as there are 400 islanders, carib and non-carib, working on the film) don't mind enough to make a big deal out of it.

Its just a fun loving Pirate story. Their not Cannibals and people know their not cannibals and the movie doesn't actually name any real people. I mean come on whats next? Bug lovers coming after OSC becuase he said a group of alien bugs attacked earth. It all just seems silly.

Rivka: While I'm not going to click those links right now as I'm at work at the moment, judging from the urls I'd guess they're not from a scene in a silly movie, as was being discussed. But yes, for the record, I am a horrible person and can laugh at human suffering... in the context of fiction, exagerated to the point of silliness.

And, in some circumstances, in real life. I have a picture of a guy who got his arm ripped clean off playing tug-of-war. It's real. I laughed. But that's beside the point.
If you find me a scene from a movie of jews stealing blood from babies to make matza that's as exagerated as this bruckheimer movie about pirates is... yeah, I'll laugh.
If you send me holocaust pictures... no probably not.

As far as I can tell, both the links are to exaggerated pictures -- one a painting, likely used as propaganda, and the other more cartoonish. Probably used on little leaflet-type things.

I wasn't calling anyone "a horrible person." I was trying to point out that different people have different hot-button issues. So was Squicky, I think.

Okay, reviewing the pictures Rivka posted.

1st one, the painting: Not particularly funny, though I did get a smirk out of the poses of the two figures furthest left. Especially the one who looks like he's impatient. Nothing adds to your painting of human sacrifice quite like one guy who's just sick of waiting in line so long to get his baby soup.

2nd one, small cartoon: I did actually laugh at this one, but mainly because at first glance it looked more like the babies were peeing into their soup. It also kinda looks like the babies are flying in a big cluster, slightly funny.

The thing is, there's no jokes in either one. To be on par with Pirates of the Caribean the baby should be saying "Oh no, I'm really in HOT WATER now!" or some equally cliched pun, like I'm sure Jack will say while on his spit. Have you seen any of the propaganda cartoons Disney made during WW2? Funny, but not in the way they were intended at the time.

My point is just that there's nothing so awful that there isn't some way to find humor in it, or related to it, and I think that's a better thing to do than get uptight about a perceived slight in some silly hollywood movie.

Considering those "cartoons" she linked to were use by the Germans to justify all teh atrocities done to Jews in WW II, I don't find them funny at all.

*shrug* As I said, different hot-button issues. There are some things that I just cannot find funny, in any context. I accept that these are not universal.

And you have my full permission to call yourself any names you like. [Wink] Just wanted to be sure you were not inferring that from my post.

Enigmatic,
One of the main methods of transmitting and maintaining prejudices is through stories and jokes. I don't think they're neglible, but then I take prejudive and preventing it very seriously.

As I said, this is a pretty silly particular instance of this, but the underlying thing is pretty serious. The Spanish wanted to enslave and kill these people, so they told terrible lies about them. These lies have gone pretty much unchallenged and are a part of our cultural consciousness such that you can make silly jokes about these people eating people. Attacking this particular case isn't that big a deal, but I don't think that this is the primary target here. Rather, it's a much higher profile place then they normally have access to to address the bullcrap history that's been believed because white Europeans were telling it against colored aboriginals.

To put it into a context that I guess Americans can take seriously, I don't think many of the Jewish groups protesting The Passion of the Christ really believed that it was going to spark pogroms, but they were pretty concerned with getting the accurate view of history out there, which was that it was a hundreds of year old tradition for the Church to sponsor passion plays that had the approved result of the Christians going out on a robbing, burning, raping, and killing spree on nearby Jews. And that's a bit of history that Christians purposefully remain ignorant about.

The descendents of the Caribs have a reason to be pissed off that their ancestors had lies told about them so that it was more palatable to enslave and kill them. I think they have a right to be upset about the cultural background that grew out of this, of which this movie is an unwitting instance of. I think they also have a right to try to bring a more accurate view of history to people's attention.
