I've been browsing YouTube lately for something to have in my secondary monitor when I'm working. Music videos mostly. So I look through the music category (and some others) for the highest ranked stuff. It's almost all Japanese.

I'm wondering, is it just that this is big thing in Japan or is it that the subculture of Americans who are kinda pathetically into all things Japanese has latched onto this or what?

Also, does anyone know how to put a "Not Japan" in the search function.

---

Oh, and I really like Terra Naomi. You should check her out. Also, she's not Japanese.

I find YouTube to be insanely worthless for anything other than knowing exactly what you want. Any time I search for anything or look through the Top Whatever I get 90% crap.

Why are 5 minute clips of Anime, 12 second movies of someone laughing into the camera, and 20 differently named versions of the same video all the Top Rated or Most Viewed?

The site is way too overloaded with junk.

Japanese Television is the most completely nonsensical programming in the universe. That is what I think contributes.

While I was in Japan, there were several news reports about how big YouTube is in Japan. Apparently the Japanese love it.

I read an article the other day that talked about a lot of those spoof political things you see on the news not being by amateur kids and people in their homes, some are actually made by giant giant corporations and their stooges.

There's an Al Gore parody where he is dressed up like The Penguin, and it makes fun of his global warming stance. It's made to look like some 20 something year old did it in his basement, but in reality it was made by a big lobbying firm hired out by Exxon.

If we can't even trust YouTube anymore, then what is this world coming to?

My daughter was watching Inuyasha episodes - some were in Japanese, with English subtitles - on YouTube. That makes it educational TV. [Wink]

I gotta tell you, the Al Gore thing was pretty stupid. I didn't see it before the story broke, but looking at it, it really looks like something a Republican PR firm would fake up and not at all something that would come from an amateur.

MC,
I pretty much agree. It's sort of like what everyone predicted would happen to Wikipedia.

Squick -

I hadn't seen it either until you linked it just now. Dumbest thing I have ever seen. If they are going to pass themselves off as 20 year old amateur parody makers...at least make it somewhat funny.

Hope they didn't spend too much time or money on that...actually wait, I do.
