I was wondering how many murders occur in Metro D.C. each year. Curiously, that isn't the sort of thing they like to have easily available on the internet.

The reason I was wondering is some recent events were causing me to feel like Mormons murder their family members rather more often than the general populace. Mainly because I seem to know several in the first or second degree in the last couple of years.

But then, I was thinking maybe someone being Mormon makes it an interesting news item, and they are over reported. I mean, there are like 6 million Mormons in the U.S. so look at a city of that size- and how many murders are occuring? I don't know, who thought a website called the Dark side would make me so depressed?

I know of a couple Catholics who murdered family members, if that makes you feel any better. [Wink]

mothertree,

I'm not sure that comparing murder stats for "Mormons" to stats for Washington DC would tell you anything. Comparing murder of related persons among LDS members to overall murder statistics in DC would seem to be more of a stretch.

Unless you just want to feel safer by comparison. DC has been, afterall, the "murder capital" of the US. Practically any place and any subpopulation is going to look safer in comparison to DC and its inhabitants.

quote:
Cutting the murder rate by almost 20% in one year is a testament to the benefits of adopting NYC's approach. So why did our murder rate climb by 9 deaths this year? I would chalk it up to the sustained poor economic climate and the perception (fair or not) that Bloomberg is not as tough as Giuliani on crime.
From Kayla's 4th link (the one not in the same post). This to me is about the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Nine more people are killed that year, which was caused by people thinking the new mayor isn't as hard on crime. Please. Nobody thinks of their mayor before deciding whether to kill someone. "I would love to kill that person there, but that darn Giuliani will get me".

I'd also like to point out that a "murder rate" would have to be expressed as a ratio. For example 4 per 100,000 people in the population. That's a RATE. The number "9" is not a rate. It's a tally, or in this case a difference.

It's like comparing apples and pie filling.
