My 12-year-old has now seen the "Hitchhiker's Guide" movie twice. Not having gone in with the same, possibly unreasonable expectations I had, he enjoyed it wholeheartedly. (I did too, but I still felt somewhat disappointed when the lines spoken weren't as funny as they lines I had been expecting)

Today it came up and he asked what other versions there had been. I told him about the radio shows and the TV show and the books, and casually mentioned I had the shows on DVD. His eyes lit up, and he started watching these 30-year old shows with painful-to-watch special effects. He loves 'em.

I also mentioned there was a video game, and gave him the link to the BBC's flash version. That was 5 hours ago. It delights me no end to know that my son, who favors fast-paced, ultra violent, dazzlingly exciting shoot-em-up games is now completely, frighteningly intent on getting that damn Babel fish in his ear, just as I was many years ago.

Soon he'll ask to borrow the books, and I'll have him forever...

My daughter (11) is now reading the books although she hasn't yet been exposed to the movie or to any of the other versions. I'm not sure how far she is, she's at the grandparents' house with my omnibus edition.

I just took my 6-, 8-, and 10-year-old siblings to the movie. The littlest got a little freaked out when John Malkovich started walking on spider legs, the middle one kept asking me howcome that happened and thought the Vorgons were really gross, but the oldest - she was right in there. She even laughed at some of the subtler jokes (she loved the point of view gun) and kept asking me what I thought the fourth smartest species on earth was. (Monkeys, we decided.)

Yep. The future is safe.

Get this - I knew about Hitchhikers before my folks. Or at least before my mom, who has never read the books, heard the radio show, or see the old tv series. How this came to be I don't know, but the movie seems to have gotten them. I was the last in my family to see it, cause I've been sick with a stuff nose and cough, which doesn't exactly lend itself to laughing. I'm still sick with that, but I went to see it tonight.

I wish I'd waited. I probably would have liked it more. But as of tonight... I thought it was ok. I enjoyed it, and there were some parts that got a chuckle out of me, but it didn't have me anywhere near the side splitting bouts of laughter the book drives me to.

Good job Chris. Having met your sons, I have to say that you and Teres are obviously wonderful parents. And having fostered a love of Weird Al, could Douglas Adams have really been THAT far behind?

Chris, the other night I had the boys out for family night at a Chick-fil-A that has a lady making balloon animals and stuff every week. The boys got entire balloon Pirate costumes [Eek!] including hats, belts and swords and a parrot.

They were playing and eating and eating and playing. My nearly 8 year old took off all his pirate stuff and just had the sword. He held it straight up and and said (iin fair immitation of Graham Chapman, accent and everything), "I am Arthur, King of the Brittons!"

I thought I'd die from joy! [Big Grin] My seven-year-old is quoting Monty Python *wipes tear* It was a proud moment in Geek parenting.

I love the Hitchhikers series!! I was only about eleven ( now fourteen) when I read the first one (I've read them all at least three times). I wish I could see the movie but I dont have the time or money. as for Monty Python I've only seen the Holy Grail and it has convinced me that I need to see more. If likeing Weird Al ,Monty Python, and Douglas Adams' work is being a geek then I dont ever want to be anything else! [Hail]

[Frown] My parents went and saw it without me. My stepdad asked if I had read the books, and I told him I had read all five. He confessed he'd only read the first one. But now I probably won't get a chance to see it, unless I go by myself, and that's no fun.

OH MY GOD! What is the link?

And, on topic, I gave one of my best friends a paperback copy of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for her birthday. And, when I was in Barnes and Noble the other day, spotted the TV show on DVD, the radio show on CD, and the book on CD. Unfortunately, I had no money whatsoever. [Cry]

On a parallel note, when my 11-year-old whined that there was nothing to read, I gave her the Dragonsong trilogy -- the very same books that introduced me to Pern.

She zipped through them, and now she's hooked. [Big Grin]

I guess I'm just a radio show purist!

If you get an AppleIIe emulator, you can find the original text-based game. It's pretty cool. Though you can't save.

Driving to school this morning, Robert was very anxious that he wouldn't be late. I asked why he was so concerned, and he said, "Today is the day I start learning balancce. "

"Balance? In what subject?"

"No, Mom, in the Star Wars club. I'm learning how to use the Force."

"Oh, I see. That's cool."

"Jonathan says Jedi can see through time. Is that true?"

"Well, some of them can, I think. But not all of them."

Then he nodded sagely and went off to class.
