...my eighty-year-old professor, Adler, last semester, who harrassed a twenty-year-old student in my class?

He's just been arrested. It was in yesterday's paper.

According to the article (which I can't quote, because it's in Hebrew), he just got back from out of the country, and Abby's charges were finally verified. Adler was arrested for harrassment. Although he admitted to it, his defense was "We're speaking of an eighty year old man, a senior citizen, a retiree of the university, who continues to research international affairs, and there is no justification for taking away his freedom." (This is paraphrased, because, like I said, the article is in Hebrew.)

I don't see how that makes the matter better, but that may just be me. But apparently it worked, because he was released, albeit on probation.

[Eek!]

There's something very creepy about seeing an article in the paper about a crime you were practically there to witness, especially as the event happened six months ago, and I'd almost forgotten about it myself. But there was a total of six people in the class... until Abby dropped, and there were five. And we all studied with him for the rest of the semester. Now he's been arrested, and it's in the paper. It's just so surreal.

Um, how about that he'll probably do it again? And, considering that most sexual offenders are not caught the first time (I've read statistics that say the average sex offender has 72 victims before they're caught, but it was a long time ago, and I don't feel like researching right now), how many other victims does he have out there? I highly doubt he started harrassing (assaulting?) women this late in life.

But yeah, Raia, I hear you. It was from a newspaper that I found out that a man who'd assaulted me was up on charges. I was 15 when it happened, and 23 when he was charged, and I'd completely forgotten it. Too bad the @#@#$!! was fined a mere $100 CDN for 9 of the 16 charges against him, no jail time, and no medical license revoked.

Wow, that sucks... I'm with you, Raia: there's no justification for his actions, no matter how good he is in his profession. Nothing exempts you from being a good person! [Frown]

Wow Raia, that's really creepy.
Isn't there any way to prove that there has been sexual assault ? I mean, I can understand that they released it if there were no proof (we have had a peculiary creepy story here recently with people in jail for years because they were charged of rape of young children, and it appeared they were innocent...) but if there are proof, then I don't get it.

At least the scumbag is on the official radar now. I'm curious, though-arrested for harrassment? Is that a crime over there? I mean, here it's certainly a career-killer, but it doesn't get you jailed.

I love hearing about 'pillars of the community' from defense attorneys.

Released on probabtion or released (with bail) until the trial?

If he was just arrested, I don't see how they'd have had time to have a trial, and if the charge is harrassment (not assault) then I don't think there's anything strange about his not being incarcerated while waiting for trial.

Maybe they had a trial and I missed it, I don't know... but he was released on probation. "With restricted conditions" was how the paper put it.

That could also mean they don't think they have a strong enough case to go to court, but the university has slapped some restrictions on him.

When I'm more awake, maybe I'll (try to) read the article. Link please, Raia?

I can't find it online... I have the article in my hand, but I'm not adept enough at typing in Hebrew to make it an easy task to transcribe the whole thing. I'll keep looking online, if you want. It's from עיתון כל העיר.

>_<

I don't know if my Hebrew is up to reading the article, but it is NOT up to reading the Google results I'm getting.

I just Googled the name up the paper. You probably can supply some keywords (like, the professor's last name?) to help . . .
