One of the gentleman I recently worked for has decided to run for office. He is a Christian Liberal, meaning a Democrat with strong Church support.
I have hinted that I would work on his campaign in a paid position, but could not afford to either donate at this time, or to volunteer. Why? Because the company he ran laid me off due to mispending, mostly on his account.
He has hinted that if he had enough donations, he would consider hiring me. He likes the way I can create sound bites. ("What is a service economy? An economy of servants begging work from the elite." "Accountability for schools and teachers are fine. When can we get accountability for Congressmen?"
Sunday he is having his first major speech and public gathering. He and it is about 50 miles from my house. I think going would be interesting.
I can picture myself feeding him the ideas I lay out on Hatrack, working to get them into reality. I could be the power behind his throne.
The problem is I don't believe he is electable. He has neither the looks, the style, or the charisma to get elected, and his management style is too laid back to work well. While hitching my wagon to a political powerhouse would be exciting, hitching it to a sinking anchor may just drag me under too.
Does anyone else have experience working for new would-be politicians?

Just wait until the headline linking the Democratic candidate's campaign manager to OSC's forums, a known haven of Mormons, atheists, and assorted weirdoes. The christian right will have a field day!
I helped a guy get elected to the School Board. He was not of my party and I hate his stance on everything but the school issue.
He won the election and is tearing the school board apart from inside. I happen to be very proud of the small role I played in making life uncomfortable for the Superintendent of Schools and his majority cabal on the School Board of Osceola County.
Go get 'em!!!
by the way, just editing these people's press releases and other public "statements" is a HUGE boon to all mankind, IMHO. I'm shocked at how few people can string together coherent sentences lacking egregious spelling or grammatical errors.

I will share an amusing anecdote about local school board elections.
A candidate with the last name of "Flick" was running for an open seat. She had bumper sticker-sized signs printed up with nothing but her name on them. In all capital, block letters:
FLICK
The typesetter placed the "l" just a bit too close to the "i", making them look a lot like a "u".
But our hapless candidate didn't notice that before she and her family plastered the town with the signs, pretty much on every telephone pole on every main road.
She lost the election that year.
When she ran again, two years later, she printed new signs, same size but vertical lettering:

I don't think that's likely, Dan. Assuming you're competent, the worst thing that could happen is that other machines could notice his decent speechwriting and give you some of the credit.

Im not a Democrat myself, but i did partially help one gain power back when I was a kid.
A freind of my Dad's was running for City Council and a floor debate was held for them at my High School.
I hammerd his main apponent, a Republican busness mand, with a long winded question not open to interpretation.
The trick when dealing with my fellow Repuplicans is give them a question that's impossible to awnser correctly. Example:
"In the past Councils have wisely kept our town small to avoid the hazerds that come with growth. That said, all the local business' need their clientel to stay running and avoid going out of business like many before them. Do you agree? Of course you do; any resonable man would. Yet, correct me if im wrong, you have openly supported closeing off campus lunches. And this puzzles me somewhat. Taco Bell, Frosty King, Jolly Cone, and all the other local fast food restraunts owe most of theyre daily revenue to the lunch rush. Which insidently is composed of the very demograph you are trying to keep on campus for lunch. So my question Mr_____ is if we are to prosper as a city without resorting to tourism and Big Citydom, then why are you supporting the idea of shooting ourselfs in the foot?"
OK im not the best political thinker, or the best speach maker. But the idea was to give him a question to answer that was wrong no matter what answer he gave. It did work though, he waffled and went for #2.
(1) If he supported the growth of the city, then he would lose the majority vote of everyone over the age of 25.
(2) If he took back his support of somthing he had been adament about up until that question then he would have shown he was the type to be easily swayed and not hold theyre ground.
(3) If he stood by his original statement, even though I had just told him how stupid he was to make it, then he would have made all those who denounced it before hand (like my dad's friend) look more ideal for the sake of the town.

But my question to you Dan_raven, is it worth it to link your name with his. Win or loose a record is kept that says you worked with him. If he was a Dreamer type, Major Conservative, or Wasteful with resources then that is reflected on you.

Go for it. If he loses, you'll have that experience, and can learn from your mistakes for future campaigns.

I'm not sure that's the case. Sure, maybe if Dan was his running mate or something, but not as something like a speechwriter. The general populace probably isn't going to notice Dan is even involved, and those "in the know" will probably recognize good speech-writing when the hear it, even if (or maybe especially if) it comes from the opponent's camp. (Which, come to think of it is just a long winded way to say what Tom D said above. )
