It's hard to say why it happened beyond they felt they should be paying less for her position.
After she got home, she filled me in on the details. She's been given thirty days with three options: find another job with the company and keep her three years experience there; stay in her position, but take a $15G cut in salary with reduced benefits; or take a three week severance pay package and not darken their doorstep.
Her boss knew before my wife went out on maternity, but didn't say anything then when my wife had the time to at least look for something else.
But it's going to be okay. It is.

Good chance they were worried about getting sued for terminating someone for taking maternity leave -- not because they were, but because it might look like they were.

((Sopwith)) I hope she finds something she wants. I'm assuming that even if she finds a position in the company, she'll be looking elsewhere for a while. Jerks.

Does she at least not have to make the decision until the end of the 30 days? So she can be looking for something else within and outside of the company, and then take the 3 weeks severance or the pay cut if she doesn't find something else?

Sopwith, prayers are with you, but so are some words of advice. Hmm. Check out the contract. When I just talked to my principal, and asked her if I would have my same position when I returned, and she said she could not tell me that, and then asked how my memory was, I wondered if there was a hidden agenda. So, just check, that's all I'm saying.
