As of 12:01am tonight, the final star wars movie will be in theaters. Which means in another 6-8 months it will likely be on DVD.
So when Lucus comes out with the 1-3 trilogy pack (and you know he will), who will buy it?
I have the original trilogy on DVD, but I didn't get 1 or 2 on DVD. If this movie is any good, I will likely buy the trilogy when it is released. I figure, even if #1 was terrible, #2 was not all that bad. If #3 is good, it will be worth getting the trilogy pack to complete my collection.

Nah. I don't own the Original trilogy on DVD either, since it's the ones with the goofiness edited in.

I already have 1, 2 and the OT set. I'll just buy 3 individually.
By the way, I suggest that those who don't own the OT set, because they are the special editions or whatever, should at least rent them. I can't believe how good they made the films look on the DVDs. You wouldn't believe that they are decades old films!

When does Clone Wars vol 2 come out? I want to see it, since apparantly characters are crossing over into the movies from it.

I have the first movie, which is the fourth movie, and the fourth movie, which is the first movie, and the second movie, which is the fifth movie, but not the fifth movie, which is the second movie, and the third movie, which is the sixth movie, but not the sixth movie, which is the third movie, on VHS.
I don't suppose I'll be able to complete my collection, as I assume the sixth movie, which is the third movie, will only be available on DVD. I think this is also the case for the fifth movie, which is the second movie.
I have no intention of buying the re-edited versions of anything.

Your VHS editions of the the Classic Trilogy ARE re-edited. Lucas has been tweaking with the movies since they were released and re-released in theaters, even before the VHS releases, and long before the 1997 Special Editions.

Actually, there are VHS editions of the OT that are not re-edited, re-mastered, re-anything. Just depends on how long ago you bought them. Also, we have Star Wars on Betamax. I think my friend Rich has it on laserdisc, too.
I do wish I could get a DVD version WITH the improved space battles of the re-release but WITHOUT the Greedo shooting first and Stupid Sarlac Pit monster.

Actually, in the DVD version, it's more like they shoot simultaneously. Yeah, I know. Greedo shouldn't be shooting at all... That's pretty much the only alteration which I complain about, and even that is more of a joke to me rather than an actual irritation.
And I think Taal is right. Even the very earliest VHS versions have a few tweeks, and are NOT the same as what was in theatres in 1977. Was Eps IV ever released on video before it was given its episode number and name?

Seems like with DVD they ought to be able to store the changes separately, and let you decide what you want to see.
Now *THAT* would be a real "High Tech Tweak."
I've always wondered why movies come in a wide screen version and a TV format version, when all you have to do is record the pan and scan information and let the DVD player figure it out as it goes along. Then you could have either version without storing two whole movies.

There's a difference between re-editing and tweaking. I know the blue screen shadows were eliminated, and the original didn't say Episode IV. But the scene cuts remain the same.
Growing up has more to do with being satisfied with what I've got than buying duplicates just 'cause it's the latest thing. I'm certainly not going to replace my VHS library.
Actually, recently my VHS library has gotten huge, because the rental place is selling tapes at rental prices just to get them of the shelves, presumably to replace them with DVD's.

Neo-dragon, you may be right about the additon of episode # and title to the scroll before it was on VHS. While it's a pretty minor change, still a valid "there was a change" point.
I've seen the DVD version and the Han/Greedo scene is nowhere near as bad as the re-released theater version. Still a dumb change though, which weakens Han's character arc from smuggler/scoundrel to genuinely good guy. But it is a good geek-cred joke, yes. I honestly hate the new Sarlac pit monster far more than the shooting timing issues. The old Sarlac was awesome, scary, and a little mysterious. The new one just looks dumb and makes a lot of the choreography of the scene make no sense.
That's all just for the record. I like DVDs and will be getting them all sooner or later. The OT is not a big rush for me because I do have it in other versions.

I don't particularly like the newer films; I certainly wouldn't spend money to have them in my home, on the assumption that something might compel me to watch them again. EpIII might be different; then again, it might not.
I would own DVDs of the original trilogy, but for the fact that I strongly dislike some of the changes and am indifferent to most of the others. If a version is ever released that includes the original scenes -- even removed from the main film and available only from the menu -- I might consider it. Otherwise, Lucas isn't going to get another dime from me.

I was a huge Star Wars fan. I've done the watching all three origianl movies in a row in a day in a real movie theater for about 6 years untill the theater stopped doing it. I was there opening day for the rereleases and EpI. I didn't even watch EpII in the theaters and I'm not going to EpIII either. George Lucas gets no more money from me.
For me, being a fan means being invested in the qaulity of the original work, not swallowing whatever drek that comes out under the same aegis amd pretending it's great. But then again, I was highly critical of Return of the King too, so maybe I'm just a big old grump.

Nope: 95 years from time of publication or 120 years from creation, whichever is earlier. Works whose copyright originates with a corporation are works for hire.

Nope. Which means that someone can make a derivative work without permission of Episode IV after it's protection ends even while Episode V is under copyright. But the better be sure only elements from the first movie is used.
Trademark protection on characters might extend past that, which might make it problematic. I don't know which IP doctrine would win out in that situation.
The clock on the special editions, however, start counting from when they came out, not from when the original came out. But derivative works of the original would still be allowed.

I've got 4,5,and 6 in the ultimate laserdisc set. No Greedo with a gun, no stupid reworked finale song, and no whiny Hayden Christensen as Vader's ghost.

I've been so tempted to beg someone with the original laserdiscs to make me a set somehow... I really really really want the true originals on DVD rather than the Special Editions.
As for the prequel trilogy, I bought I and II each for about 12 bucks at one of my local grocery stores several months after release. I'll do the same with III when the time comes since I've already bought them.

Okay, I respect people's opinions about all the other changes whether I agree or not, but the new celebration music at the end of RotJ is soooooooo much better for the end of the saga than Ewoks beating drums and chanting, it's not even funny!
