I am trying to eradicate these poisonous foodstuffs from the family's diet.

These are some of the many pitfalls I have encountered:

Paul Newman's microwave popcorn with no trans fats. OK, this sounds like it would be just fine. However, the smell when it is popping makes me want to hurl. I had to deodorize the microwave with lemon this morning. The popcorn tastes OK, but the smell lingers, and a good two thirds of popcorn's appeal is its smell.

Oreos OK, there are some things that have to be what they are. Oreos are one such thing. I would rather go without than with a changed Oreo.

These are things that work:

Tortilla chips. You can find many without trans fats.

Potato chips. Lays potato chips use regular oil. (and we could do a whole other thread on oils that are not cold pressed. Sheesh. But one step at a time.)They also make a natural line of snacks now that even has "healthy" Cheese Doodles. ha!

Pretzels. Snyders has some with no trans fats, but not all.

Basically, what I have discovered, by trying to get rid of it, is that it is EVERYWHERE.

Indeed, but it is much better to make your own popcorn and DROWN it in butter, smother it in butter until it screams.
CVS cookies do not have transfat, neither does Schoolboy biscuits, they are very good. I love the dark chocolate ones.
I have no clue how to make apple pie without using shortening.
And of course, Reeces doesn't have it and neither does Mr Goodbar or a nice triple chocolate shake.

Ah-ha, you don't live with a health-conscious strict vegetairan without discovering lots of crazy alternatives to mainstream ingredients.... There's a company that sells a big tub of Palm Kernel Oil that works just like shortening, we get it in the natural foods aisles or at our natural food co-op. Works fine, but it's expensive.

You could also use lard, I imagine. Nice and natural that way. [Smile]

I also really like the Newman-O's as an alternative to Oreos, particularly the Mint flavored ones. We also make our own popcorn in the hot air popper and cover it with butter spray, nutritional yeast, and curry powder. Mmm!

Yes, I think I will have to take the extra five minutes to pop popcorn.

aside: Zeugma, I cannot go to the Ithaca festival. It is my daughter's birthday week. Make sure you see Crow and Donna!
