The walkway is deserted now. The windows of the little huts glow and flicker from the fires inside. The sounds of the forest fill the soft night air. Luke has wandered away from the Chief's hut and stands staring up at the Death Star. Leia finds him like that.
LUKE Luke, what's wrong?
Luke turns and looks at her a long moment.
LUKE Leia... do you remember your mother? Your real mother?
LEIA Just a little bit. She died when I was very young.
LUKE What do you remember?
LEIA Just...images, really. Feelings.
LUKE Tell me.
LEIA (a little surprised at his insistence) She was very beautiful. Kind, but...sad. (looks up) Why are you asking me all this?
He looks away.
LUKE I have no memory of my mother. I never knew her.

Do we know Leia knows she's adopted? If Organna remarried, but she thought she was the daughter of Organna and his first wife, then it makes sense.

Don't you think she'd respond a little differently to Luke's stressing 'real' if she didn't realize she was adopted? Something like: what do you mean my 'real' mother?
Regardless I'll see if I can't find some proof in the script.

Why would she? If her father remarried relatively quickly, it's possible she grew up thinking of that person as her "mother," even knowing she wasn't her "real" mother.

This is getting ridiculous now. I love all the Star Wars films, but there are some inconsistencies between some of them. This is just the latest one.
But if you must have an explanation, bear in mind that all Leia really recalled were "images and feelings". Maybe all she has is a vague recollection of some brief telepathic connection with Padme's mind before she dies. Luke may have had a similar connection and never realized it. Padme's last words were stating that there was still good in Anakin. This same idea seems to be what drives Luke to save him decades later. Maybe the certainty that there was still good in Vader came from what he sensed in his mother's mind as he was born. So both twins "knew" their mother just before she died. Luke remembered his mother's feelings about Anakin, and Leia remembered her mother herself, though only vaguely.
I was kinda making that up as I went along, but now that I think about it, That's probably how I'll look at it from now on.

Ok, not to join the obssesive band-wagon, but wouldn't Leia be a bit weirded out that she could remember stuff from the day of her birth, then?

It doesn't say much in the script about Leia's family, just this:
quote:BEN Then the Emperor has already won. You were our only hope.
LUKE Yoda spoke of another.
BEN The other he spoke of is your twin sister.
LUKE But I have no sister.
BEN Hmm. To protect you both from the Emperor, you were hidden from your father when you were born. The Emperor knew, as I did, if Anakin were to have any offspring, they would be a threat to him. That is the reason why your sister remains safely anonymous.
LUKE Leia! Leia's my sister.
BEN Your insight serves you well. Bury your feelings deep down, Luke. They do you credit. But they could be made to serve the Emperor.
Luke looks into the distance, trying to comprehend all this.
BEN (continuing his narrative) When your father left, he didn't know your mother was pregnant. Your mother and I knew he would find out eventually, but we wanted to keep you both as safe as possible, for as long as possible. So I took you to live with my brother Owen on Tatooine... and your mother took Leia to live as the daughter of Senator Organa, on Alderaan.
Luke turns, and settles near Ben to hear the tale.
BEN (attempting to give solace with his words) The Organa household was high-born and politically quite powerful in that system. Leia became a princess by virtue of lineage... no one knew she'd been adopted, of course. But it was a title without real power, since Alderaan had long been a democracy. Even so, the family continued to be politically powerful, and Leia, following in her foster father's path, became a senator as well. That's not all she became, of course... she became the leader of her cell in the Alliance against the corrupt Empire. And because she had diplomatic immunity, she was a vital link for getting information to the Rebel cause. That's what she was doing when her path crossed yours... for her foster parents had always told her to contact me on Tatooine, if her troubles became desperate.
Which suggests that she doesn't know. But I don't think senator Organa's wife, Leia's adopted mother died when she was very young. I think she probably died when Alderaan blew. It doesn't say anything about her. Also, I suspect this passage I just quoted was hugely cut down in the final movie. Cause I don't remember it at all from that scene.
It also reveals another plot hole...
quote:When your father left, he didn't know your mother was pregnant.
So there's not much in the script. But stuff I remember reading from the EU suggests that she did actually know, and that her foster mother didn't die till later, not when she was young.

Like she said, "just images and feelings". She may not have been told exactly when her mother died, so she may think they are vague memories from early childhood.

If you read the novelization, it says (and this was authorized by Lucas!) that her mother went with her, posed as a nurse or a maid or something, and died when she was young, if I'm remembering that aright.
Lucas, of course, doesn't care if he contradicts himself.

Did you know that the RotJ novelization also says that Owen Lars was Obi-wan Kenobi's brother? The novelizations are authorized by Lucas alright, but when they contradict the films, guess which one is definitive.
