You know, like Freespace, Freelancer, and Tachyon: the Fringe? I know people probably still play those but I haven't seen many new ones in a while. The only ones I have seen are "Star Wars"-related. Nothing against SW, but I liked the feeling of stepping into a whole new world... SW is too familiar, and feels generic now.

*sigh*

Here are some links that should be of interest:

X series
Babylon 5: I've Found Her (freeware, fan made, and awesome with Newtonian physics)
Starshatter (also uses Newtonian physics -- definitely check this one out)
Parkan II
Vega Strike (open-source freeware, with a Privateer-themed mod available)
Allegiance -- This one's pretty old, but I include it here because it's freeware (the only Microsoft product I'm aware of ever to be open-sourced), it's still played, and it's awesome. Imagine combining Homeworld with Wing Commander, such that every fighter you command is played by another player. Each game has 2-6 teams; each team has a single commander, who views the battlefield and gives commands via an RTS-style interface. Everyone else either flies from a cockpit or (in the case of cap-ships and bombers) acts a turret gunner for another pilot. Steep learning curve, but very fun once you learn it.
