I have a friend who has a friend (trust me this is actually the case) who got fired from her volunteer work for dating a I think a Muslim. Apparently being a religious volunteer communitee service thingy they supposedly have the right to fire someone not of their faith.

Now I can understand why a company not hire someone becuase of X religious reasons that while wrong can't be helped and would you want to work their anyways? BUT isn't it against the Charter of Canadian Right's and Freedoms to be fired for a religious reason? Since it is unconstitutional to be persecuted because of race, ethnic background, nationality, mental or physical handicaps, sexual orientation or religion.

Thus I want someone thoughts on this even if you were working in a christian volunteer organization do they have the right to fire you if you were dating a non christian?

Sorry, that's discrimination. In the USA that would probably be grounds for a nasty lawsuit.

Your friend should contact the media and make a stink.

I'm not so sure, if it was volunteer work. Did they actually fire her, or did they ask her to quit volunteering? There's probably somewhat of a difference if you're not on the payroll.

The fact that it wasn't a job seems to make a big difference. It seems that you are able to refuse help from anybody you want to.

Now that I am not so sure, I'm certain our mutual friend said "fired" but it could've been "please don't come back" I don't know just that a few months ago this happened I felt shocked by it one of my friends didn't think it was discimination though he also doesn't think Mormons are christian so I doubt his opinion just a tad....

It is volunteer work. Who cares? Plenty of other organizations to volunteer for, if you are into that sort of thing.

Didn't matter if they said "fired" or not, if she wasn't being paid for it she wasn't fired, and doesn't have any 'right' to make a stink. Now, I personally think it's wrong to not let her volunteer because she's dating a Muslim, although that also kinda depends on what sort of volunteer work she was doing. Regardless, they have the right to refuse help for anyone they want. Just like a charity can decline a $$ donation if they don't approve of the ethics of the individual or corporation offering it. you can't force someone to accept help.

Eh - it's gotta be demoralizing to get fired from a volunteer position.

That organization would really hate me. I mean, I had the nerve to marry a Muslim. Altho we never dated. . .

I'd like to know the name of the organization. Just for curiousity sake. And where it happened.

Is it a legal requirement that the Catholic Church hire non-Christians as priests? Let us hope not.

Legally, she has no grounds for a lawsuit (in the US). She was not a paid employee of the company, therefore her employment was not wrongfully terminated.
