My daughter's dance recital was this afternoon. The studio that she attends has many children and we were treated to a wonderful production with over 37 separate numbers. Anna was in 4 dances: a Cats tribute, a jazz dance, a ballet dance and a hip-hop number. I'm always proud of her and today was no exception. When she was onstage I was transfixed. I couldn't tell you a single thing about any of the other dancers. I'm moved to attempt a poetic tribute that I hope conveys my sense of wonder and joy in watching her dance.
Your father's eye was drawn to you As light softly washed the stage Music flared and with steps quite true Grace and poise you did engage
Long of limb and body lithe Your movements set the time Swift and sure your arms did scythe The gesture complete and so sublime
The dance is you and you the dance The music seeped from your smile Others should wish for such a chance To bathe in beauty for just awhile

Rivka, thanks for the acknowledgement. I know my poetry isn't very good but I wanted to share my joy in my lovely daughter's grace and elegance.

How old is your daughter, depending on age you should probably show that to her, not under six why would dad write about me, not between 11 and 16 parents are stupid, anything over sixteen she'd appriciated it again.

Bob, I try and though I'm not always a successful as I'd wish to be I'm quite pleased with the person that Anna is becoming. I'm not sure if I can claim any credit for that or not, but regardless, I'm proud of just not what she does but who she is.

no.6, I'm glad you enjoyed it but I am under no illusions about my poetic ability. I used to be fairly proficient at descriptive prose but even those skills are no longer as sharp as they once were.

That's beautiful. Although if my father had written a poem for me I would simply respond with an awkward stare, shifting of the weight, clearing of the throat and a cordial "thank-you". This is probably because I still dwell in the adolescent ignorance that plagues my age group to this day. You must have a very warm and open family setting. Plus I'm a dude so...

Janger, Yes we do have a demonstrative atmosphere in this family. I'm of the firm opinion that telling and showing loved ones that they are treasured is so beneficial in maintaining a healthy family.
Kwea, thanks for the nice words. Perhaps you could share some of your works with us sometime?
Thanks to everyone that has responded. I was feeling a bit ignored for a while there.

That's wonderful! I just wrote my sister a birthday card letting her know how proud I am of the person she is becoming and understanding the challenges she is going through. While I haven't talked to her yet about it (she's been in Mexico) my mom was impressed and told me my sister loved it.

Christy, that's exactly what I'm talking about. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in our daily lives that we forget how special and unique our connections are. I've found that when I'm particularly stressed that a hug with my wife and daughter accompanied by a sincere, "I love you guys' eases my stress and worry more than anything else. It's also amazing how much your friends will appreciate and benefit from your taking the time to make sure they know that you treasure them. At the risk of violating a copyright I'm gonna quote from a song by the Bellamy Brothers, "Let your love flow with the smallest of things and let your love grow..."
