In OSC's latest column he reviews "Shark Boy and Lava Girl," with the following comments on Robert Rodriquez:

quote:
Robert Rodriguez is credited as director, editor, executive producer, producer, composer, writer, cinematographer, and I swear I saw his name in about five other places in the credits.

It became a joke. I think he gave himself credit as "Mr. Rodriguez's Assistant" if he fanned himself during the filming.

Then, looking at his listing at IMDB.com, I realized he does this on every film he makes.

It made sense on El Mariachi, his first movie, which he made with forty-nine cents and an Etch-a-Sketch. He had to do everything.

But he has a budget now. So Mr. Rodriguez, here's a friendly suggestion: Let somebody else do some of these jobs, so you can spend your time on the things that only you can do.

It is a joke, but I suspect it's one that Rodriquez laughs about. Whether you like his movies or not (I have no intention of seeing this movie, for example, but I loved "Sin City") he succeeded in making them on his own terms, a very, very difficult thing to do in that industry.

And he does, in fact, collaborate. Just not on projects that are very personal to him. This one is based on a story by his own son (credited), I can imagine why he wouldn't hand off any more than he had to.

Not a big deal, really. As it happens I agree that Rodriquez prolly overextends, and I'm not a fan of many half of his stuff, but the idea of a filmmaker competing with the big boys with stuff he makes himself out of his house amuses me no end.

OSC is more than welcome to like or dislike or criticize or not. Just thought I'd comment. Interesting aside, though: OSC and Rodriquez are probably the two most family-fixated creators working today [Smile]

When I rented "Once upon a time in Mexico" there was sort of a "making of" special at the end. It was all about all the tricks he used to make the movie in a very short amount of time, for not very much money. He showed how he himself did a lot of the special effects, he made all the music, did all the editing... He really does do all he claims to do.

But...

I personally think his movies suck. The whole time I was thinking "So this is why the movie wasn't very good... He made it with pocket change in two weeks..."

See, and I love Robert Rodriguez. I don't know if I just love the idea of Robert Rodriguez making all that stuff up in the garage at his house in Austin, or if I actually like his movies, but either way, it works for me. [Big Grin]

Truly, the man has control issues, and I don't like ALL of his movies (SpyKids was a great set of films for my seven-year-old, though, and we will probably buy Lavagirl and Sharkboy when it comes out on DVD), but I think he has more hits than misses, and that's all I care about in a director. Besides, he's charming, and that's more than I can say for Tarantino. Blecch.
