You don't need a ship at all. You just need a city near enough the ocean to reach the square with the fish or whale. You'll probably need to build something that produces culture (like a temple) to expand your border out, since fish and whales do not appear in shallow/coastline square.
The fish/whale icon doesn't provide you with any special abilities, civ-wise. It provides the city with a production bonus. Think of the bonus cattle provide. A square with a whale gets a bonus of food, shields, and gold, which goes to that city's production.

I am having a very strange game this time around. The Persians are on their own (rather large) continent so they were able to grow without worrying about other civs...so they are a bit stronger than the rest of us. So they got all bossy, and tried to demand tribute and when I told them to go jump a lake which caused them to declare war on me. However, neither of us have transport ships...so our armies can't get at each other. It is rather odd, since we have been at war for like 15 turns, but no shots have been fired. Though, I think when they finally do get over to my continent, they will find they bought off more than they can chew since everyone on my continent has been trading extensively with each other since they beginning of the game and have quite a few mutual defense pacts.

one thing I hate is the stupid copy protection. It makes me put the CD in the drive to play. I tried to download the crack for civ 3 gold, but it didn't work. It is rather annoying when you buy a game (and even register it) and they stick you with annoying crap.

It's only $9.94 at Wal-Mart. It's just annoying - I couldn't even use the CD drive for awhile until the pieces of the CD fell out. The drive tray wouldn't even stay in. It seems to be working now, though.

ya it was gamecopy world...but the version wasn't exact...since they didn't have exactly what I was looking for...though I really could have searched more (and might later). *shrugs* It is rather amusing when you have to look for a crack for a game that you bought legally. I still have the old crack for Sims 2 that doesn't let you build stuff. I need to mess around and find a better one...but I haven't worried about it since when I need to use the build mode I just changed out the exe file and put in the disk. That is the benefit of having bought the game...you don't really need a crack, it just makes it handy if you don't want to hunt of the disk every time you want to play.
I'm glad I bought half life 2 of steam, so I don't have to worry about that. Of course, steam has annoyed some people, but it has worked perfectly for me.
Well, I made it to 2050 but was in 2nd place. It was a strange game with only one war (mine) and in that war no shots were fired. I just built up my military (and a bunch of ships) and they sued for peace. I did beat everyone on culture. I almost complety wiped out China due to the fact that all their cities kept revolting and coming over to my side. It is a fun game...but it is way to addicting.

tisk tisk, I hate the culture aspect, makes conquering cities next to useless except as buffers and makes you have to build temples in lvl 1 cities, thank god for FreeCiv v2.something. Aswome game too bad I onyl played once. My friend wasn't around too much.

I rather like the culture system. What makes conquering cities useless in the late game is the fact that the corruption/waste is completely out of balance in this version. It doesn't scale well for map size, so if you're playing on a huge map with the max players any new cities will never really be productive.
