I own a Sanyo DVD Recorder (model DRW-500), and I plan on using 120-minute DVD+R discs to record home movies that are currently on VHS tapes. I have a VCR connected to the DVD recorder. Some of the movies are less than 120 minutes long.
I want to know if this the correct and safe procedure for putting more than one video onto a DVD+R:
1) Begin recoring from a VHS tape. 2) Pause recording. 3) Eject the VHS. 4) Put in a new VHS. 5) Find the beginning of the movie. 6) Begin recording again.
I could not find anything directly related to this question in my instruction manual.
The e-mail tech support people want me to call a number, but I thought I'd check with you guys first to make it easier on me.
If anybody knows what I should do, please reply and tell me (I'm not in a BIG hurry, but I'd like to know soon!)

You COULD do it. But why? DVDs are cheap, and you'd wind up having to fast-forward past a whole movie AND some static to start the second movie.

If they're home recorded movies, then this method should work. It really just comes down to what quality the person wants.

I think, if you press stop, the recorder will still allow you to record onto the disc, and will make any subsequent recordings as new titles on the disc. This is not entirely clear in the manual, but based on previous experience with DVD recorders, that would make sense.
Once you've recorded everything you want on the disc, press Stop twice, then press Setup. Create names for your titles in the Play/Edit Titles menu, and then Finalize Disc under the Edit Disc menu. Once it's finalized, you won't be able to record or edit it anymore.

Still, if anybody knows for sure differently or anything, feel free to keep posting here. I check pretty much every day.
Tom--I've got STACKS of movies to record. DVD's may be cheap, but not if I needed 40 or 50. It'd be cheaper to put more than one movie on each disc. I don't mind taking the time to fast-forward.
Narr--Thanks. I don't know all about titles with my recorder. The manual said you can set titles to come every (4 minutes default, or any other time you set), but I don't know how to set random titles. I may just call Sanyo later.

That would be chapters. A title is one video segment on the disc, while a chapter is a place marked within that video segment which allows you to jump to it quickly.
(Well, actually, this is not technically correct. But it's a useful lie. )
If you press stop during a recording, and then press record again, the DVD player will make a new title automatically, and add a menu selection for it on the disc. At least, I assume this is how it works, based on previous experience.
As for automatic chapters, that would be somewhere in the recorder's setup menus.
And don't forget to finalize your discs at the end!
