I'm not sure if elegant affairs are supposed to result in such horrendous hangovers, but nevertheless...

Some of you may remember the query I posted a month or so regarding 1920's music. Last night was my partner's 30th birthday which was carried off with a 1920's theme.

To their great credit, everyone made a huge effort and our tiny St Kilda studio played host to an amazing array of elegant toffs, gangsters and flappers. In fact, in a moment of inspired irony, the only person to show up in civvies was my hairstylist, who drunkenly interuppted the speeches calling to find out if there was still beer and could he please be let in.

Justine made a fantastic dress and faux-fur stole, prior to the drunken-ness my hairstylist had attempted to flatten down hair that has for the better part of a decade been trained to be spiky.

We blew $700 on food, alcohol, decorations and outdoor gas heaters. We've probably got about 3 months of alcohol left, at normal consumption rates...

photos to come.

The cleanup is a complete nightmare. [Big Grin]

Affair:

1. Something done or to be done; business.

2. affairs Transactions and other matters of professional or public business: affairs of state.

3.
a. An occurrence, event, or matter: The senator's death was a tragic affair.
b. A social function.

4. An object or a contrivance: Their first car was a ramshackle affair.

5. A matter of personal concern.

6. affairs Personal business: get one's affairs in order.

7. A matter causing public scandal and controversy: the Dreyfus affair.

8. A romantic and sexual relationship, sometimes one of brief duration, between two people who are not married to each other.

I would have to say, the only definition elegant could apply to is really 3b. I could grudgingly agree that it might be possible to be elegant with 1- 6, but that's as far as I could go. And, no, if it involves hangovers, it really couldn't have been elegant. [Wink] I'm bitchy in the morning.

But, pictures are a definite must! Sounds like a blast. I love the 20s and can't wait to see the photos.

Most definitely 3b.

So then, how much of an affair needs to be 100% elegant before the whole shebang* is considered to be so?

While I carry a hangover today to remind of last night's excesses, it's at least partly due to a lack of food and general exhaustion from the setup of the party. I assure you I comported myself with dignity throughout the entire affair!

*Shebang:

1.
a. An occurence, event, or matter that's bigger than the usual affair: The senator's death was a tragic affair, but his wake was a hell of a shebang.
b. A social function with panache.

2. Sound made by the purple-crested northen ocean owl as it mistakes its usual prey of buffalo with detroit rolling steel.

3. [deleted from board for reasons of decency, dignity and sheer human compassion.]

Alright then. I guess it could have been elegant. But still, a 20s themed party. It seems unlikely that it would elegant. Maybe our definitions of elegant are different.

Elegant: 1: refined and tasteful in appearance or behavior or style; 2: suggesting taste, ease, and wealth [syn: graceful, refined] 3: of seemingly effortless beauty in form or proportion 4: refined or imposing in manner or appearance; befitting a royal court; "a courtly gentleman" [syn: courtly, formal, stately]

Now you've got me curious about 3 for shebang. Does it have anything to do with the song? Also, what dictionary are you using, because the one I'm using doesn't have your second definition, but has one that only computer geeks could understand.

It's the Australian Limited English Dictionary.

Hmmm.... I see where you're coming from... however think more "Great Gatsby" than "Chicago". For example, I was in a full tuxedo, starched pleated shirt, white patterned vest, white bow tie and pocket-ker-chief. Justine had made herself this fabulous red number that I can't even begin to describe, partly because it looked so great, partly because I'm so tired I can barely type.... [Big Grin]

"Great Gatsby" was exactly what I pictured, Troubs. Sounds like it was divine.

OK, now you can see just what *kind* of 20's party it was!

Note - pics are in no particular order, the first couple are not us! Justine, (birthday girl) is in the red dress she made herself, and I'm in the black tux with the white vest and bow-tie....

So without further ado:

Cool party Troubs. Glad you had fun. I pictured Great Gatsby from the beginning of the thread as well.

What a smashing party! So many great characters.

You and Justine look wonderful, but who's the other chick you're sprawled across the bed with (black dress, maroon shawl), hmmm?

Great pictures. [Big Grin]

Edit: Heh, that reminds me of the time I was walking through downtown Toronto and saw a clothing store named Foreign Affair. It made me laugh.

Yeah, Jen (Ms Gangster) is one of my oldest friends and a 1/3 partner with Jus and myself in our design business...

All the flappers sitting on the couch are Justine's sisters, with her brother - (mr-nonchalantly-picks-up-three-girls) played bartender....

It was a hell of a night!

That's Madison (Maddy). She's the most gorgeous four-year old and my niece-in-law. During the next day's cleanup, Maddy was asking to help and got stuck in with a mop, telling people: "Watch out! That area's soaking and you'll slip!"

She's so cute.

I am in the US still, but that's because we won't have work in Canada until fall 2006. But I'm working on licensing in Canada and such. How are you?

Busy! Getting this film course underway, writing for the magazine, working on my design business and random weird jobs that come my way... but pretty good nonetheless. The best part about the party was that it showed me that I have more friends than I thought and that I'm surrounded by a really great bunch of people.

How about you?

At one point there was a shot of two people on a bed, and I thought to myself, All right! All this scrolling through pictures of people I don't know is about to pay off!

Alas ...

Taking this off-topic.

Hey - Troubadour - what do you say of the way our match vs England's going? Ponting injured and out a little later, we lost Hayden too. Damn, those English bowlers are good!

Not really certain old-chap. I'm the least Aussie bloke you're likely to find - I virtually never watch cricket and only then if it's a one-day match. I also don't really watch AFL, although you get funny looks living in Victoria if you don't support *somebody*....

Having said that I've always believed that Australia fields the best cricket teams in the world. Britain may have some good bowlers, but we've got some of the most aggressive and hard-hitting batsmen anywhere in the world.
